Veterans battle to keep their day
STAMFORD -- They've stormed the beaches of Normandy, fought the Vietcong and defended their country against the "axis of evil."

Now, local veterans are taking on the city's Board of Education, fighting its decision not to close for Veterans Day next year.
By requiring school children to attend classes, veterans say the board has decided not to observe the holiday.

The liberals will stop at nothing in their disdain for all things military or American.

I do not see anything wrong with their decision. Since the real holiday falls on a Saturday why give them Friday off. Now if the real holiday falls during the week and the cancel it, I would have a problem with that. Exclamation

It's the slow erosion of things that I object to.
They skip it this year when it's on a Saturday, then skip it next year when it's on a Sunday. Now they have a precedence for skipping it when it's on a weekday. I'm afraid I have to take the stand similar to the group that staunchly supports the second amendment. Oppose every erosion no matter how slight.

For what it's worth, I've never lived in an area where Veteran's Day is anything more than a notation on the calendar. My local area schools have, for years, not observed Veteran's day with a holiday or any special program. It must be nice to live in an area that does.

If there's a consolation prize, it's Memorial Day. Now if they were considering getting rid of that, I'd be livid.
