Military deaths in Iraq, Afghanistan reach 2,974
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Now the death toll is 9/11 times two.
U.S. military deaths from Iraq and Afghanistan now surpass those of the most devastating terrorist attack in America’s history, the trigger for what came next.
The latest milestone for a country at war came Friday without commemoration.
........................................
Not for the first time, war that was started to answer death has resulted in at least as much death for the country that was first attacked, quite apart from the higher numbers of enemy and civilians killed, too.
........................................
“There’s never a good war but if the war’s going well and the overall mission remains powerful, these numbers are not what people are focusing on,” said Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Boston University. “If this becomes the subject, then something’s gone wrong.” |
MSNBC
Am I the only one who remembers how they abhored "body counts" during Viet Nam? It seems that today, they can't wait to report them, daily!
It also appears they can't wait to set "milestones" to announce how bad things are going.
Julian Zelizer (whoever that is) should take note that constant negative views reported and each death reported as it happens should realize that "what is gone terribly wrong" is just that, the negative reporting.
Of course, positive reporting would not fit the leftist anti- Iraq war agenda. _________________ Clark County Conservative |

This is pathetic and absolutely inexcusable. Irregardless if you are pro or anti the war in Iraq there is death in every war. Why in the world don't these moonbats and frothing at the mouth sensationalists report about the murder toll for the year of 2005 or better yet, for this year? Or if that does not interest them, all the vehicular deaths, those that die due to drunk driving--and lets not report anything about the teen suicide rate in the U.S. which is higher than the death toll to date in Iraq for just this year alone.
Guess this just does not fit into their agenda Lew. _________________

The deaths of American military personnel as a result the attack at Pearl Harbor totalled 2117. The total deaths of American military personnel in the ensuing World War II was 407,216.
If it had existed at the time, National Public Radio would have breathlessly opened every news segment with the daily count if it had been available. It's just sick.

Lew,
I came across your excellent letter of Nov 2005. First as a comment
to this item on HotAir
then found your post at RightInaLeftWorld
Very powerful writing
Quote: | Their sacrifices are not to be taken lightly, denigrated or sensationalized but deserve to be held up to the entire world as among the finest people this country has ever produced. |
I think those who harp on a number are denigrating the sacrifice they made.
If you want numbers to choke on read up on the battle of Gettysburg
and Pickett's Charge. |
