Video clips detail jailed corpsman’s combat ordeals
SAN DIEGO — He’s spent four months held in confinement in the Camp Pendleton brig, facing accusations that he and seven Marines in his squad deliberately shot and killed an Iraqi last spring.
But heavy on the mind of Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Melson Bacos are the harrowing memories of combat and the deaths of friends on one life-altering day nearly two years ago in Fallujah.
On Dec. 12, 2004, five men with his infantry battalion — Staff Sgt. Melvin L. Blazer, 38, Sgt. Jeffrey L. Kirk, 24, Cpls. Jason S. Clairday and Ian W. Stewart, both 21, and Lance Cpl. Hilario F. Lopez, 22 — were killed in intense fighting in a Fallujah neighborhood during Operation Urgent Fury. A dozen others were wounded.
Their memories and the minute details of that day still haunt Bacos. The blood on his gloved hands from a wounded buddy. Echoes of “Corpsman, up!” Their screams of pain. Painful pleas for morphine. The white paleness of death. The heartbreak of lost friends and the heartaches for their wives and children.

What has our military come to when our fighting men have more to fear from politically correct lawyers and making a mistake in combat than they have of the enemy? _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |
