Scharf's body was never recovered, but his military insignia, dog tags, and other items were found.
"I sincerely feel that Chuck made it out of that airplane," Lowerison said. "They're lying through their teeth."

Lowerison claims she possesses documents that prove her brother escaped the crash and was taken prisoner. The documents are reports from Soviet and Vietnamese sources, as well as a high-level U.S. military attaché who visited Vietnam after the war, indicating that Scharf survived.

Lowerison said the Pentagon wants to close her brother's case in order to avoid embarrassing the Vietnamese government, which it sees as a new source of trade and economic relations.

"Not only has his country abandoned him," she said," but now they've killed him too."

According to a Pentagon spokesman, the evidence that Scharf died in the crash is "overwhelming."

Patricia Scharf, Scharf's widow who lives in Virginia, attended Thursday's ceremony. According to the spokesman, she was comforted by the burial.
