‘Breach’ delivers an unimpressive attack upon The Church

The film centers around two people, the protagonist Eric O’Neil, who is a young not yet FBI Agent and the antagonist Robert Hanssen, who is a 25 year veteran of the FBI, as well as, spy for the Russians. During the movie several comments are made by Hanssen to the young assistant regarding his Jesuit college scholarship, and in one scene an upset Mr. O’Neil makes reference to his wife’s anger after Hanssen’s discussion of Opus Dei.

The Jesuits are historically known for their erudition, yet recent years have shown many to be at odds with Church doctrine and enablers of leftist ideology, whereas Opus Dei was founded specifically to combat Marxism in the early twentieth century. For the last 80 years Opus Dei and the Jesuits have waged a battle for hearts and minds in South America. The Jesuits preaching man made heaven on earth in the absence of God through Liberation Theology, while Opus Dei counters with salvation through Christ.

Were the filmmakers aware of this or simply catering to the Hollywood standard of attacking the conservative Opus Dei and fawning over the leftist Jesuits? Most likely it was just another weak attack upon The Church by the godless film community.

*note- If leftist infiltration into the Catholic Church in America interests you, I highly recommend Goodbye, Good Men, by Michael S. Rose.
