Is William Shatner the Hippest Guy in Hollywood?

Born 1931 in Quebec to Jewish Ukrainian immigrants Joseph and Ana, one has to assume Williams’s survival instincts come from his parents, whom possessed the prescient ability to escape the Bolsheviks.

Written off as a Starfleet Captain as opposed to an actor, Shatner has had to claw his way to work since the 60’s. From TJ Hooker to his current role as Dennis Crane in Boston Legal, Shatner is proving “he isn’t a bad actor.” Shatner is much more than an actor though, as his Tekwar science fiction books and musical career show. Some might have laughed at Shatner’s first stab in music with the 1968 release of ‘The Transformed Man’, yet Shatner and Ben Folds broke the mold with the 2004 release of ‘Has Been’. The remake of “Common People” is one of the best popular culture songs of the last 20 years. If you are of the opinion Shatner cannot sing then check this song out and be prepared to be amazed. Pure brilliance.

It is interesting to contemplate the creative process and those who are content and those who seem unable to find comfort in their work. Russell Crowe is arguably the greatest actor working, yet he is in a rock band. Crowe in similar fashion as Brando seems to despise Hollywood and this gives question, with talent as great as theirs do they put effort into the work? Is acting even art? The greatest actors are always striving to find another creative outlet to find purpose in their lives.

Seems with creative pursuits, originality more than anything brings comfort. Shatner is definitely original and found his creative outlet, whether in acting, books or singing the man “Has Been” and will always be the hippest in Hollywood.
