I found this huge book that says it is the Handbook Maintenance Instructions for Navy Models R3Y-1 and R3Y-2 Airplanes published under the authority of the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics.

It says it was published on March 15, 1955.

The book is the size of six yellow pages stacked on top of each other.

Just curious if anyone ever heard of these planes?

Being somewhat of an aircraft enthusiast, I have to admit I don't recall a lot about this one. But, some info and photos are here http://www.answers.com/topic/r3y-tradewind

I'm not familiar with the R3Y's, but, considering the Navy's old aircraft nomenclature system, they have to be early models of the R4Y, which was a Navy version of the old twin engine Convair 340, a real nice aircraft, about the size of the old R4D (Navy version), C-47 (Army Air Corp/Air Force version), DC-3 (Civillian version) "Gooney Bird" except it was tricycle gear and more modern.
