We note with regret the passing of Greg Stevens of Stevens Reed Curcio & Potholm, producer of the SVPT ad campaign.

His impact on US history is assured, as well as the gratitude of a sizable proportion of the American citizenry.

Well done Mr. Stevens...well done. May you rest in peace.

Kean adviser, 'Swift Boat' ad creator Greg Stevens dies

Greg Stevens, a nationally renowned political strategist who helped turn Tom Kean into one of state's most popular governors and more recently devised the notorious "Swift Boat" presidential campaign ad, died today.

Stevens, 58, served as chief of staff to Kean and helped him attain his 1985 landslide victory over Democrat Peter Shapiro.

While Stevens was best known in New Jersey for his ties to Kean and his involvement in several statewide campaigns, his clever, often savage campaign ads brought national attention to the consultant, who most recently lived in Portland, Maine.

In 1988 he turned footage of Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis riding in a tank into a devastating TV ad that made the Massachusetts governor look silly.

In 2004, his firm, Stevens Reed Curcio & Potholm, produced ads that mortally wounded Democrat John Kerry's campaign by casting doubt on his war record as a Navy Swift Boat veteran.

The stinging ads did not always succeed. When Stevens worked for former Kean aide Doug Forrester's Republican gubernatorial campaign in 2005, its ads assailed Jon Corzine for being "too close to the Democratic bosses." Corzine won.

Stevens rarely apologized for his hard-hitting style. When the Swift Boat ad was criticized as unfair, Stevens told the New York Times: "Don't those veterans have as much right to talk about Vietnam as John Kerry?"

Former colleagues described Stevens as a shrewd political strategist.

Stevens graduated from the University of Maine in 1971 with a degree in education. He was a reporter for the now-defunct Woodbridge News Tribune from 1971 to 1976, covering the Statehouse. He served as press secretary for Gerald Ford's New Jersey campaign in 1976, and served a similar role in Kean's unsuccessful 1977 campaign.

He went on to work for two Republican U.S. Senators from Maine before returning to New Jersey to manage Kean's press operation in his first term, eventually becoming chief of staff.

Note the use of the word "notorious." Sigh...

with his passing, we have to pray now that a 'replacement' strategist can rise from the ashes of the current crop of misguided 2006 failure oriented GOP strategists!
