CORONADO, Calif. -- Members of the Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument Fund said in a press release Friday that they will place five holiday wreaths on the Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument at Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado.

"When people come to our base and visit this memorial it reminds them of the people that gone before us to fight for our freedom and the liberties we enjoy today," Naval Amphibious Cmdr. Steve Starboard said.
The members will be placing the wreaths in remembrance of personnel who lost their lives during the Vietnam conflict while serving on swift boats, according to the press release.
The Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument honors all service members who died in action during the Vietnam conflict. Its features three restored Vietnam era swift boats placed near a commemorative wall, unto which service members' names are etched into the wall.
The Naval Amphibious Base is where most of the Vietnam-era swift boat veterans conducted their training in the late 1960s, the press release said.
Pictures of the memorial with the wreaths will be included in care packages sent to soldiers serving in Iraq, according to officials.

In all fairness, the NBCSanDiego.com article and video should have reflected that the Vietnam Unit Memorial
in Coronado commemorates ALL of the US Navy and Coast Guard veterans that lost their lives in the Vietnam
conflict. Not just Swift Boat sailors
In addition to the wall, there are restored examples of a Patrol Boat River (PBR), a Swift Boat (PCF) and a Mobile
Riverine Craft (CCB) plus a smaller monument with places where battles were fought during the war and also
the names of the PBR sailors that are "still on patrol"

Swift Boat sailor Bob Bolger and his wife Val were at the memorial on December 7 making sure that the wreathes
were placed properly on all three craft and the wall when the television reporters showed up. He was more than
happy to provide his insight. Which became part of the NBC affiliate news organization's piece.

It is also true that all three of the "Brownwater Navy" veterans organizations are providing Christmas greetings
and care packages to the sailors of Riverine Squadron Two that have been patrolling the dangerous waters of the
Tigris and Euphrates rivers since February of this year. We not only share their experiences but are damn proud
of what they are accomplishing in carrying out the traditions started so long ago
"Supporting the troops" is more than just a hollow catch phrase to those that have served full tours in a war zone
