Major Ed "Too Tall to Fly" Freeman, immortalized in the book and movie, "We Were Soldiers Once," joins his fellow Cavalrymen in Fiddlers Green, the place where the souls of sailors and cavalrymen gather after leaving this earth. Major Freeman was 80 years old and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001 by President Bush for his continuous bravery under fire in the 1965 Battle of Ia Drang Valley, depicted in the movie.
He was one of the two pilots who repeatedly flew into the battle zone, against heavy North Vietnamese machine gun fire to bring supplies, ammo and to ferry out the wounded, when Medevac Helicopters were ordered to stay out.
Commentary: Farewell to an American hero
Rest in Peace, Major Freeman, many men still live because of your bravery, Sir. _________________ Clark County Conservative |
