Both of the people who still watch Chris Mathews were delighted.
That's where George Bush used to go to rabble-rouse. A big difference is that the cadets didn't need to be told to receive the President enthusiastically when President Bush went to speak to them.
I do wish that conservative commentators would quote Mathews exactly - it makes us look bad when we are imprecise. We don't have to dissemble or omit anything to make Mathews' remarks any worse than they were - they were already egregious.
Bob Schieffer made an ask of himself last night too - but in this case, he's probably right - that speech probably IS the defining moment for the Obama presidency.
He showed himself to be ineffectual, indecisive and committed to absolutely nothing that's good for the United States of America. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~

Considering how much Obama (and Chris Matthews) both hate the military and the military hate Obama because of how he is stabbing them in the back while using them as "photo op" props, that was probably an inadvertent but accurate assessment. Don't forget that Obama wrote of one of his experiences working somewhere in the private sector that he was "operating behind enemy lines". Clearly Obama and his "fellow travelers" are at war with the private sector and capitalism as well as America in general and the military in particular.
Too bad someone didn't rig up a tape recording of Congressman Joe Wilson's "YOU LIE!" and blast it over the PA system. Maybe they should have made the cadets wear Obama-type Packers "Cheesehead" hats or give all the cadets air horns and have them blaring periodically. That would have been in keeping with the clown show Obama and his handlers tried to pull off. |

I agree with the assessment that Obama and his handlers were trying to put on a "clown show." It clearly did not work. And, I was not suprised the media did not report on the cool but militarily correct reception by the Cadets. Instead they tried to convince its readership that the Cadets were understandably tired and bored because they had been asked to arrive and take their seats seats four hours early. Bull.
When the camera panned the audience it was easy to see that the cadets were not buying what Obma was selling. There was no enthusiasm for him or the contradictory and uninspiring speech he was reading from the tele-prompter. Then, in an obvious effort to leave the television audience with the impression that the speech was well received, Obama's writers tossed in a couple of cheap "applause lines" at the end.
At the conclusion of the speech it was especially dissappointing to see the top brass in the front row leap to their feet and applaud in a sad display of political correctness. They should have taken their cue from the Cadets and followed military protocol. The Cadets had it right -- they did not want to be part of a political "clown show."
