Pearl Harbor survivor recalls lessons learned

Paul Aschbrenner of Derby, KS was aboard the Oklahoma when it was hit by torpedoes and was rescued by one of the motor launches shown near the Oklahoma. Aschbrenner is shown at left, pointing to photos he saved of the event. Photo by Linda Stinnett.

It has been 69 years, but Paul Aschbrenner of Derby wants all Americans to remember the lessons learned at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

Aschbrenner was serving in the U.S. Navy and was aboard the USS Oklahoma on the day which President Franklin D. Roosevelt said “will live in infamy,” following the attack on U.S. military forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. America was taken by surprise when the Japanese struck at Pearl Harbor and Aschbrenner reminds everyone who asks that “be prepared” is a motto that should be taken seriously.

See the world
Aschbrenner said his story actually starts when he was in high school. The native of Sumner, Iowa grew up in the Great Depression and graduated from Sumner High School in 1940.

He had already found that jobs were scarce. Everyone in that area wanted to work for the best paying jobs in the John Deere plant, but Aschbrenner had only been able to find a job working on a farm. It paid $1 a day or $18 a month plus room and board.
