Long article, a Must-read:
World War IV: How It Started, What It Means, and Why We Have to Win
Norman Podhoretz

A subtitle to this article might be "Why John Kerry must lose."

This is a LONG article but well worth reading. It meticulously outlines
the history of terrorism as it has affected the US for over 30 years. It
should be required reading for anyone who claims that the agressive
response that we have taken toward terrorists and the nations that
support them has made them "hate" us more. On the contrary, it shows
how the failure of at least six US presidents to mount a real response to
attack after attack gave the impression that the US was weak and either
unwilling or unable to do so.
We in the Jacksonville community will NEVER forget the chilly, rainy
Sunday morning of October 23, 1983, when we got the news that 241
of "our" marines were brutally murdered in the Beirut bombing. These
brave men who had gone there on a peace-keeping mission were our
neighbors, friends, family, soccer coaches, and church members.
The city has erected a beautiful, inspiring memorial to these men that
can easily be seen from US17 as visitors and active duty military make
the drive to Camp Lejeune. Each year, on or near October 23, a service
is held at the memorial which family and friends from all over the US
attend, although the incident was over 20 years ago. Even though
President Regan, whom I love and respect, came to offer comfort to the
families and fellow marines after the incident, his official response was to
withdraw the troops from Lebanon instead of slamming the terrorists.
The article offers many more examples of how our inaction gave the
terrorists more and more confidence to dream of causing the downfall
of the US. Those who have no respect for the rule of law and have the
patience to wait were not really worried about a policy that attempted
to pursue them through the courts.
Thanks to FDL for calling this important article to our attention! _________________ Susan R. Morton |
