Douglas Brinkley claims Kerry was out of uniform when he started to protest the war. But I think he was still in the Navy wasn't he ?

And if you cut to 1996 when Kerry is asked to give the class oration at Yale, and he is opposed to Johnson's policies in Vietnam yet he's enlisted in the Navy, that's classic Richard Kerry, his father, meaning you respect service to the United States even if you are opposed to a policy. So when you study the early years of John Kerry and see the influence of Richard Kerry on him, it's not surprising that he had the views he had. I might add when he came home in March of 1969, John Kerry with three purple hearts, he did not protest the war, join VAW, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, until he was out of uniform because from his family he had a great respect for U.S., what U.S. Navy uniform meant.

He was off of active duty, but he was still a commissioned officer in the Naval Reserves. (IRR - non-drilling)

Wasn't he 'officially' discharged from the IR in like, 1978? To me, although no longer bound officially by the UCMJ, it looks as if he would have been held accountable for his actions being a former officer. I mean, a Lieutenant that had been out for just at 6 years was recently recalled (he is fighting it) ....... they told him that he had not officially resigned his commission and was bound for something unreal like 50 years or until he retired his commission ....... did JFnK retire/resign his commission? Would be hard to think that since he was officially released at a much later date.

Boston Globe, 6/16/2003: ........"I didn't really want to get involved in the war," Kerry said in a little-noticed contribution to a book of Vietnam reminiscences published in 1986. "When I signed up for the swift boats, they had very little to do with the war. They were engaged in coastal patrolling and that's what I thought I was going to be doing."......... But two weeks after he arrived in Vietnam, the swift boat mission changed -- and Kerry went from having one of the safest assignments in the escalating conflict to one of the most dangerous.

Boston Globe, 6/16/2003: ......... He requested and was granted a transfer out of Vietnam six months before his combat tour was slated to end on the grounds that he had earned three Purple Hearts. None of his wounds was disabling; he said one cost him two days of service and the other two did not lead to any absence. .........The bottom line is that Kerry could have remained but he chose to seek an early transfer.
