If Senator Strom Thurman were still alive and a younger man today, could you imagine a major political party selecting him as a candidate for the office of the presidency. Thurman's political record and personal stance on civil rights offended most African-Americans. The Democrats would never nominate a candidate like Strom Thurman. The uproar would drown out all voices that spoke in defense of him.
Now imagine that all Vietnam Veterans were from just one particular ethnic group, say Hispanic for instance. The Democrats are very sensitive about the political feelings of that ethnic group and wouldn't do anything to offend it.
Yet the fact that most Veterans are personally opposed to John Kerry because of his anti-war activities is shrugged off as if it were of no consequence. Their feelings about the character of a man who turned his back on his comrades while they're fighting for their lives is dismissed as not relevant today. This is tantamount to running David Duke for president and not expecting a backlash from Black voters! |
