|

On John's DD214 it lists "Bronze Star with Combat "V" and Silver Star with Combat "V". the reason I ask is that according to http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=14743 it questions the validity of the "V" designation as applied to the Silver Star. Furthermore on the John Kerry official web site a PDF document titled "COASTAL DIVISION ELEVEN COMMAND HISTORY" "AWARDS" indicates that LTJG Kerry was awarded the Silver Star however, there is no mention of the "V" designation.
What I am basically asking is that can someone please put this matter to rest. What is the truth behind the V Designation attached to his awards? Is it appropriate, a typo or what?
I was unable to located the actual award citation on his web site. I think the actual citation would really put it to rest.
Thanks for you help in getting this bit a truth out as well. |

Whyitsme,
I posted this a few days ago:
Here is the most recent directive on the matter, the Navy & Marine Corps Awards Manual. As stated in a previous post, the highest award allowing for a combat "V" is the Distinguished Flying Cross, then it goes down to the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, Navy Comm, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement. That is in SECNAVINST 1650.1G, Appendix A to Chapter 2.

When you have a moment, review Chapter 2, and what it states about the PH, Section 3, Requirements.
