Kerry is afraid of O'Neill and the truth.

This is what I dug up using a service I have for genealogy, I have access for old newspapers.

"The "liberal" art of avoiding debates"
July 19, 1971
Chronicle Telegram, Elyria Ohio

TV has been getting it in the neck for it's handling of news issues. The liberals according to the Piro Agnew indictiment have it all their own way on TV and in radio and the opposition is left scratching. However, in one recent instance (or rather a series of instances) TV really tried to live up to a formula for balanced debate and fell on it's face simply because one liberal spokesman proved all to skillful at evasive maneuvers when the opposition tried to corner him for arguement.

The elusive quarry who succeeded in avoiding at least seven invitations to meet an opponent in face-to-face electronic confrontation is John Kerry, the young Navy lieutenant who has become the front man for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Kerry got the headlines last spring by leading a contingent of violently antiwar veterans to Washington to ask for immediate withdrawal from an "iniquitous" war.

No one can doubt Kerry's physical courage; in the course of his Southeast Asian service (he commanded one of those fast aluminum boats designed to control the South Vietnamese rivers), he was wounded three times. His medals include three Purple Hearts.

Physical bravery and intellectual hardihood, however, are two different things. When it comes to willingness to tangle with an opposition in direct debate, where has John Kerry been?

THE ANSWER is he has been hiding and the Vietnam Veterans for a Just Peace (they want to get the war over with too but on an honorable basis) just can’t seem to flush him out.

Item: Prentiss Childs, the producer of CBS’s Face the Nation program off ered his forum to both Kerry and the VVJP for face-to-face confrontation. The Veterans for a Just Peace agreed, but Kerry pleaded a “prior engagement” in St. Louis. Mr. Childs offered to do Face the Nation from anywhere in the country. St. Louis included and at any time. But Kerry refused.

Item Two: When CBS said it was willing to give 60 minutes to Kerry and the VVJP for a debate with Morley Safer moderating, VVJP accepted. Kerry also accepted, but with a unique condition; he told CBS that, since President Richard Nixon had been named by VVJP as the “only valid national spokesman for all Americans,” he’d debate only with the President.

Item Three: National Educational TV was willing to stage a syndicated debate, but Kerry refused.

Item Four: Metromedia stood ready to syndicate a debate, but Kerry again said no.

Item Five: Helen Whitney called the VVJP and offered NBC Comment for debate with Ed Newman moderating, but it came to nothing even though VVJP had accepted.

Item Six: Wayne Thomas of Boston offered debate over RKO TV, but once again Kerry declined.

Item Seven: The Jack Cole Show, WBZ TV Boxton had Kerry on alone and then Bruce Kesler and John O’Neill for VVJP alone. But Kerry wouldn’t agree to a face-to-face confrontation. Eventually, after Cole threatened to expose the refusal, Kerry agreed on a half hour taped debate. Kesler and O’Neill made it from New Yorl to Boston in spite of a rainstorm that delayed them for three hours at La Guardia Airport. However, Kerry called from New York to say that rain had prevented him from flying. O’Neill waited in Boston for two days, with the sun shining, for Kerry to show up. Kerry never came.

Item Eight: Dick Cavett offered to air a debate between Kerry and VVJP’s O’Neill. After much pulling and hauling, a sit-down style conversation meeting was arranged. Cavett gave Kerry all the breaks on commercial interlude briefings. After the show Cavett suggested to O’Neill that he read two anti-war books; It had taken eight efforts to get Kerry to meet with VVJP; when he finally agreed it was under circumstances that gave him every benefit of the TV show technicalities involved.

A brave man? Physically, yes. But why is he so afraid of a free give and take in debate?

I found this rather interesting considering Kerry is wanting the President to "Bring it on" with debate over records/service, but it is SBVT, O'Neill and everyone else speaking out on this subject.

Kerry should have really said "Mr. O'Neill if you want to debate records and service then Bring It On", but he won't since he knows he would be slaughtered with the truth!!!

That was a very interesting commentary on Kerry, so he has always
been a runner, someone who does not have the courage of his
convictens? Hmm.......Is this a surprise, really? Wink

In 1971, Kerry only wanted to debate with the President (Nixon). In 2004, he only wants to debate with the President (Bush). Neither President went to Vietnam, so he is afraid to debate those who know about his lies!!!
