I was going over Kerry's testimony back in '71 again (don't ask me why, I am not normally masochistic). I found where he said, "We saw that ... blacks provided the highest percentage of casualties." That is just not true. According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Page, the following totals appear under the chart of "U.S. MILITARY CASUALTIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, DEATHS BY RACE AND PAY GRADE":
RACE WHITE BLACK
TOTAL 50,112 7,264
Oh, of course, we don't expect The New Soldier to check his facts. No, that wouldn't do, at all.

Thanks for the link. The anti-war groups have used this tactic before, during the Vietnam War, to divide Americans in their support for the war. Looking back on my own Vietnam experience, I recall Blacks in our unit but they weren't even close to a majority. One day I walked into my hootch and I thought an ARVN had been attached to our company. It turned out that the young man was from Guam or some other Pacific island. He's the only Asian I saw in American units. |

I remember aboard both the Oriskany and Ranger we had many more Asians than Hispanics. More blacks than both together, and more whites than all the others combined. These are reflected in the Wall's statistics.
I imagine that there may have been a single unit in Viet Nam that had more blacks KIA than others. Nevertheless, I have never been one to allow my imagination to take the place of real data.
What is more important to me, however, is that I don't make an issue of someone's skin color. We all bleed red. Even if what Kerry said were true, it would not relate to the moral rightness of standing against Communist insurgency in Viet Nam. That's what we had to do, and even Kerry acknowledged that when he said "we can't stand against Communism everywhere in the world." Well, yes we can, and Ronald Reagan proved that. Kerry's use of racist statistics only served to highlight that truth.
Look at what Kerry is doing now, trying to get the government to silence SBVT! Kerry isn't interested in having the record exposed, he would rather divert attention to some other issue, even going so far as to advocate censorship -- something we are all against, or so I thought.
