Listening to the Monday night Joe Scarborough, Tom Oliphant (Boston Globe) describes the recent criticism of Kerry’s war record as typical of a Kerry campaign. The criticisms always occur at about this time in the campaign.
Per Oilphant, Kerry’s textbook response is to claim the opponent is out to smear his reputation and in doing so turn it to his advantage. The campaign version of running up the bank.
An observation of current times shows that the Democrats have a polished spin that they stick to religiously, also known as party doctrine. It is used in lieu of a direct answer to a question. It appears that Kerry will campaign relentlessly that "he" is being victimized by the Republican opposition. Doing so allows him to side step addressing the real issues.
I trust that the SBVT are well aware of this tactic and have a strategy to fold in this usual Kerry counter approach. One thing different this time, the number of veterans that will be voting. I don’t know for sure, but I would expect the veteran voting block in Massachusetts is a smaller percentage of all voters than in other places.
I feel that any one who votes should be aware of the vigor and depth of the Senator’s antiwar activity in the 1970s. My generation remembers it and very many do not like it. But some do. Younger generations see it as youthful adventure that was in error. I see it as a conviction that is still part of John Kerry’s character and no apology will be sufficient.. I must be hard headed, stubborn and otherwise despicable, but I think every voter should be aware of this part of John Kerry as I am certain it will influence any decision he is able to make. _________________ Jim Jones |
