Well maybe so. At least Jack Kennedy had the good sense to laugh off his hero status...and with good reason.
When it was discovered that Jack was cavorting with a married, german spy he had to shuck his DC desk job and was posted to PTs.
In the loss of PT109:
- the boat was operating outside its assigned patrol area; which is why search planes couldn't find the them
- its engines were disengaged; 'red over red the captains dead' is the navigation shorthand for that
- the crew was asleep; anyone remember standing order #5?
- the boat was rammed and sunk by an unsuspecting Japanese destroyer they were presumably patrolling for.
Before the Navy could convene a Board of Inquiry Joseph Kennedy had his friends at the New York Times play up the rescue making Jack a hero and completely obfuscated the need for a rescue. |
