THE REAL JOHN F. KERRY
AND HIS ANTI-AMERICAN PAST

By: David T. Pyne

Ever since Governor Howard Dean’s surprising loss and even more shocking rant and primal screech later that night, Senator John F. Kerry (D-MA) has emerged as the man to beat. The latest three day MSNBC/Reuters Zogby poll ending January 25th shows that not only has former Vermont Governor Howard Dean reversed his earlier slide but that he now has regained the momentum by pulling away from all of the other candidates and has managed to achieve a dead heat with newly-minted front-runner Senator John F. Kerry. In one day’s polling on Sunday, he closed the gap by four points. If he were to surge by an equivalent margin in Monday’s Zogby poll, which will be reported early the morning of the New Hampshire primary, it could very well show him narrowly leading although other historically less accurate polls will undoubtedly continue to show Kerry with a narrow lead. A late surge of effective multiple last-minute television advertising buys might well be enough to seal the deal for Dean in New Hampshire.

This polling data is in some respects a repeat of what we witnessed in the days leading up to Kerry’s smashing come from behind victory in Iowa only in reverse. Although clearly Dean’s upward momentum in New Hampshire polling is not nearly as marked as Kerry’s was in Iowa, it does create a very real prospect that Dean will succeed in his bid to score a come from behind victory in New Hampshire which will once again make him the front-runner. Such a Dean upset over Kerry in New Hampshire would turn the presidential nomination contest for which Kerry is currently the runaway favorite into a contentious horse race between the two men which could very well continue through March and perhaps far beyond with the final outcome in doubt. President Bush, who trails Kerry in the latest Newsweek poll by three points, would likely be the primary beneficiary of such a prolonged and contentious Democratic primary contest.
