Never having been under fire, I can't answer that, but my understanding is that they are green. I've fired thousands of US tracer rounds, and they are red.

Except in Kerry's war diary, where the ComBlock tracers are red.

Now I know that captured weapons and ammo were used by VC, and the article says he takes fire from friendlies, but this ambush wasn't set by friendlies. Yet the tracers were red.

This diary appears to be the root of the Christmas in Cambodia story, but it never says they were in Cambodia, or even near the border. Just that the river runs from Cambodia.

Will someone who knows please assess the credibility of red tracer fire?

If somebody in the delta was shooting at you with a captured/stolen weapon, they would have red tracers. If they were green tracers, they were enemy, if they were red, they MIGHT be friendly, or they might not. Viet Cong would use any weapon they could get their hands on, some of it unbelieveably old, even M3 grease guns, Thompson SMGs, old French rifles, etc.
