Kerry broadens attacks on Bush's military service
Shifts talk from medals to mettle
By Patrick Healy, Globe Staff | April 28, 2004
CLEVELAND -- Senator John F. Kerry extended his attack on President Bush's military service record and heaped scorn on Vice President Dick Cheney for avoiding the Vietnam War yesterday as the Kerry campaign continued to portray the nation's wartime leaders as once fearing war themselves.
While some questioned whether the new strategy carried risks for Kerry, who is facing questions about his antiwar activities after he returned from Vietnam, the senator and other campaign leaders sought to spread skepticism among veterans and swing voters about both Bush and Cheney.
In a feisty tone that at times snapped with anger, Kerry told 700 guests at a fund-raiser here last night: "They want you to believe that John Kerry -- who put the uniform of his country on voluntarily, who felt an obligation to go to Vietnam when so many others didn't, who stood up and fought for our country -- they want you to believe that somehow I'm not strong for the defense of our nation. Well, I've defended our nation! And I'm prepared to stand up and defend it as president and forever!"
