Kennedy was elected Senator for Life in Mass. in 1962. By 1968 or so he would be running, or just completing his run for a second term, and Chappaquidick was a few years in his future. Back in 1968 He would have still been under serious delusions about running for Pres someday.

The Crown Royal poster boy would have been looking for a maelable protege to bring along in the Senate in order to keep a true American from winning election and making Ted look like the liberal scum he is. Kerry seems to fit this bill perfectly.

Kerry was, by his own admissions, interested in becoming the next JFK, complete with war record and medals. However, it would have been difficult to do without actually being in combat and at risk, something unacceptable to Kerry.

Enter Ted Kennedy? It seems to me that a Senator would have mucho ability to make a few calls in order to arrange transfers, ensure medals, and most importantly expedite Kerry's quick departure. Not to mention doing it in such a way as to hide any involvement by the good Senator and/or Kerry himself.

Just blue skying, I find it hard to believe that Kerry would have the guts and the means to go outside his chain of command and get a medal that his immediate superiors declined to issue.

Ted Kennedy seems a likely avenue...
