From www.opinionjournal.com/best .

The Dems really, really are stupid.

This "chart" is the most complicated, discombobulated "evidence of conspiracy" ever produced!

Web of Bacon

We're in reporting mode this week, but here's something we just can't resist blogging. On Friday night we received an e-mail from the Kerry campaign informing us of its latest salvo against the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth: a chart titled "Web of Connections" (link in PDF). Aside from being a blatant rip-off of the New York Times, this strikes us as showing a Dukakisian level of political incompetence. Consider the attack and response:

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth: "John Kerry has not been honest. . . . And he lacks the capacity to lead. . . . John Kerry betrayed the men and women he served with in Vietnam. . . . He dishonored his country."

Kerry campaign: Hey, look at this chart!

Who's got the more compelling message? Actually, this is a lesson the Dems should have learned from the Clinton administration. Opponents of the Clinton health-care plan used complicated charts to deliver the message that the plan was too complicated to understand, and therefore to trust. Now the Kerry campaign is using a complicated chart in a way that shows their own message is too complicated for anyone to understand.

Anyway, if you want to talk about connections, consider this: MoveOn.org, a supposedly independent group, announced last week that it plans a series of anti-Bush ads featuring various celebrities. One of them is the actor Kevin Bacon. The University of Virginia's Oracle of Bacon reveals the close ties between Kerry and Bacon (identifying Roman numerals omitted):

John Kerry was in Last Party 2000 (2001) with Tim Robbins

Tim Robbins was in Mystic River (2003) with Kevin Bacon

This raises another troubling question about the Kerry campaign: Can we really afford to have an actor in the White House?
