Your history is wrong.

John Kerry volunteered for a very safe job, only to have the job he was doing "re-missioned"

George Bush volunteered for a dangerous job, made more dangerous by the fact that the plane he was flying was, at the time of his volunteering, deployed to Vietnam. It was only after the fact that those planes were "re-missioned". Furthermore, he was neither AWOL, nor a Deserter.

As a Veteran, I have NO problem with GWB's service, and a BIG one with Kerry's, for two basic reasons:

1) Kerry, and I base this on the first person accounts of what he did, was a "Cowboy", and Cowboys get people killed. To make it worse, he was a ticket puncher who applied for Purple Hearts for trivial wounds, so that he could go back to the world early.

2) Kerry broke faith with his fellow troops when he got back to the world. MY service was a generation later (1985-1989) so he didn't break faith with ME, but based on his behavior, he's not trustworthy.
