I hope this is okay to post here.
I saw a small article in the paper the other day about a program the Dept of Defense has set up for "anyone" that would like to help our troups in Iraq, Afganistan and Kuwait call home. It seems that regular phone cards (that you can purchase stateside) are causing a big problem of extra charges for the troups because they are for domestic calling only. When troups try and use them they incur big extra charges by calling from overseas. Plus, the Dept of Defense cards are almost half the rate of the others (see chart on web page).
The Military Exchange (PX) has set up a great program that allows "anyone" to purchase a special (very low rate) card especially for our troups calling from combat areas. These cards are the only thing that can be purchased by any civilian (non military) from the PX and sent to a loved one, or donated anonymously to a soldier in or near combat. What is great is that we can purchase a card to send to a soldier that might not be able to afford one and specify where we want it to go from several choices they list. They have set up several specific groups that you can target your card (donation) to. You can buy one card or many..
If you don't know anyone in the military serving in Iraq or Afgan., you can scroll to the bottom of the page and choose a service branch or area that you could have your card donated to (hospitalized and/or wounded, or military branches, and a special ship to shore card for shipbound service people, etc).
Here is the link.. https://thor.aafes.com/scs/default.aspx to the direct page explaining the card.
If the direct page link doesn't work, use this link to the home page of the Defense Dept Military Exchange. http://www.aafes.com or call 1-800-527-2345. Look for the "Help Our Troups Call Home" link on the right hand side of the page.
If you want to send an anonymous card, choose your preference branch, etc (lower on the page) then when you click "Purchase Now" it will show your preference (target group) on the shoping cart page.
This seems like something great we (people that don't know anyone over there) can do to help our soldiers stay in touch with loved ones that are already carrying a very heavy financial burden while they are away..
