From the VVAW FBI Files

The noted Scott Camil, of the Gainesville Eight [google that]

>after coming back from that now famous Kansas City Meeting where the Phoenix Operation was discussed – Camil’s doing a little target practice

>didn’t have a bake sale to raise money for the Chapter - sold drugs instead [ So this is how the VVAW helped Vets? ]

Quote:
Jacksonville, Florida
November 24, 1971
Vietnam Veterans Against the War {VVAW}
Gainesville, Florida

On November 18, 1971, source one advised that Scott Camil, the Southeast Regional Coordinator for Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) , reportedly attended the VVAW regional Coordinators and National Steering Committee meeting held in Kansas City, Missouri, during the weekend of November 14, 1971. Upon returning to Gainesville, Florida from this meeting, Camil reportedly stated “Look out there is going to be violence. I do not mind being a martyr”.

Source one advised that it is believed that the VVAW chapter in Gainesville, Florida is holding training sessions and bases this belief upon comments heard from unidentified VVAW members to the effect “They have just come in from bivouac”. Camil has also mentioned going to an undisclosed location for the purpose of target practice.

~snip
source one advised that for the past several weeks weapons have been brought into the VVAW headquarters in Gainesville, Florida 734 East University Avenue, which is also the residence of Scott Camil. Reportedly the Gainesville VVAW Chapter has four shotguns and at least one M-16 rifle. Reportedly there are also several pistols and knives maintained at VVAW Headquarters. Source one advised that reportedly some of the weapons maintained at VVAW Headquarters are kept in the attic over the living room in Camil’s apartment.

Source one advised on November 4, 1971 that Camil expresses the fact that a “violent revolution was necessary in the country and that Camil felt it was the only way, and that he would actually participate in it along with other veterans”.

~snip
Source one also advised that one of the sole ways the Gainesville VVAW is supporting itself financially is through the sale of drugs, primarily marijuana and hallucinagenics.

Source one advised on November 18, 1971, that the VVAW in Gainesville plans to increase the activity in the sale of drugs in the next several weeks for the purpose of raising funds to finance those members from Gainesville who plan to travel to Washington D.C., in December 1971, or January 1972.

VVAW Sources of Funding $$ Kennedy

Quote:
On June 8, 1971 [redacted] advised that another Kansas City VVAW meeting was held on June 7, 1971, and approximately twenty individuals attended. Among those attending were [redacted] and [redacted] both YSA members. At this meeting Upton mentioned they were beginning to have problems with the national VVAW organization. He said some of their regional coordinators have been dismissed due to their SWP ties and there have been attempts by the YSA and the NPAC to take over their organization. Upton further advised that several Senators were donating money to the VVAW, including Senator Edward Kennedy. [redacted] said that Upton ended the meeting by saying the National VVAW is planning to disassociate themselves with the NPAC and were not going to affiliate with subversive groups.

Check it out: I cannot find my files right this minute: I'm trying to do this from memory:

1: Kerry at Coronado from ?July 1968 to end of November 1968?

from FBI files on VVAW (I'm doing this from memory, so bear with me)
2. ? BOGGIO (?) calls for meeting to begin VVAW in November.
Lists return address as some c/o ?Marcia Silverstein

Hypothesis: Kerry involved from start? BEFORE Swift boat assignment, while he was at Swift Boat School?

Maybe that was one reason he carried an 8mm camera, to record atrocities, but couldn't find any to record??? Smile

By the way, I've tried for info on whatshisname Boggio, and that Silverstein, but didn't come up with much so far...Only references I could find were in those FBI files, but I don't see too good no more....

Cam Ranh Bay Vietnam by 10/31/68
**Failed to report until 11/17/68. Charged with 4 days leave 11/9 to 11/12/68

WHAT, KERRY DISOBEYS AN ORDER??? Embarassed Head to Kinko's...
Idea
Check it out:
1: Kerry at San Diego from 22 July 1968 to (?) of November 1968?

from FBI files on VVAW :

2. 10/27/1968 "C. James Boggio" "Having served as co-ordinator of (VVAW) for the past year...and participated in the Chicago Uprisings..." letter to (?) calls for meeting to "revigorate" VVAW on November 3, 1968.

Hypothesis: Kerry involved from start? BEFORE Swift boat assignment, while he was at Swift Boat School? Is this why he was late reporting?

Something very interesting in those files:

Section 08.pdf page 144 describes the following plan from the VVAW:

Proposal: Eliminate the discretionary power to grant administrative discharges under a separate discharge category.

III Veterens already holding other than Honorable Discharges:
Proposal: All other than Honorable Discharges issued since August 1964, the beginning of the Vietnam Era, should be changed to Honorable on all official records, with new certificates sent to the bearer on demand.

I wonder who was so concerned about that? John Kerry, perhaps? I can't prove it from the documents, does anyone see where he personally pushed for this program after he got into politics? I wish I had more time. Sad

"Talk To POWs” Jane Fonda in Hanoi/10 July, 1972

Quote:
3 years ago people told me that the United States was committing war crimes in Vietnam, crimes on the ground against the people and crimes from the air with bombs, and I refused to believe it. I thought very hard because I had been brought up to believe that the United States government stood for freedom and democracy, then I began to study – I began to read, I began to listen to reports coming from the battlefield, and I began to talk to soldiers, brave heroes of the war would come back from Indochina and I was told that it is we had committed war crimes, (…) and burned villages, and massacred civilian people, and raped the Vietnamese women, it is we who did it, and we are (quilty?) and we want the American people to know what is being done in their names.

Quote:
....and I’m sure that you – that you and – that we wish that you come home as fast as possible, I believe that the people who are speaking out against the war, who are trying to stop the war by voting against Mr Nixon for one thing, by economic boycott for another thing, and by education and persuasion of the general American public…this it is we who are doing what is best to get you home as fast as possible. The key to the (p)risons in the northern part of Vietnam is in Nixon’s hands, it is Nixon who will be able to free all prisoners, he can do this by authoring (sic)the seven point peace proposal that was put forward a year ago last July.

It is very important for us to understand that the solution (to) your problems has existed for 1 year, for 1 year. If Richard Nixon (..?) at the Paris Peace talks last July had addressed himself the seven point peace proposal, which is recognized by the people all over the world as being the most just and righteous proposal ever put forward by one side during a period of war, all of you would have been home within 3 months. This is a crime.

We think this is a crime that the President of the United States has cynically prevented your freedom, has cynically lied to the American people making them believe that it is he who is (?) peace, and we know it is the contrary.

We hope that you are taking this time to study, to learn,
so that when you come home you can speak to the rest of the American people, and we hope that will be soon.

"Jane Fonda Impressions of Talk with US POWs” ( on July 19)re Broadcast of 15 August, 1972
~snips
Quote:
Yesterday evening July 19 , I had the opportunity of meeting seven US Pilots, some of them were shot down as long ago as 1966 and some of them had been shot down very recently. They are all in good health. We had a very long talk, a very open and casual talk. We exchanged ideas freely. They asked me to bring back to the American people their sense of disgust of the war, and their shame for what they have been asked to do.

They told me that the pilots believe that they are bombing military targets, they told me that they are bombing to free their buddies down below, but, of course, we know that every bomb that falls on North Vietnam endangers the lives of the American prisoners.

Quote:
I feel very encouraged by my meeting with the pilots ( because) I feel that the studying and the reading they have been doing during their time here has taught them a great deal in putting the pieces of their lives back together again in a better way, hopefully, and I am sure that when they go home, they will go home better citizens than when they left.

FYI -I recently did a search of the Texas Tech Vietnam Virtual Archives for the term "VVAW" and received 87 hits. Supposedly they do have many documents in boxes there but it looks like many of the ones that were previously available online may have been taken offline. Not sure if that is true or not.

Havn't pursued this much, but one document that I did find was a translation of captured documents in 1972 that says thanks to the U.S. Progressives for helping them in their efforts.

It may be worth the look see for someone who lives near there.

VVAW
Operation RAW
( Rapid American Withdrawal)
September 4-7 1970 Valley Forge, PA

FBI field reports detail this mock “Search & Destroy Mission” and the active participation of Jane Fonda & John Kerry
Quote:
the march will dramatize as authentic a picture of a US Army “search and destroy” mission to the American people as possible

Quote:
quoted one John Kerry as stating “we are here because we, above all others, have earned the right to criticize the war in Southeast Asia. We are here to say that it is not patriotism to ask Americans to die for a mistake, and it is not patriotic to allow a President to talk about not being the first President to lose a war, and using us as pawns in that game

Kerry the Opportunist

Here's a chuckle for you...
This file has some extracts from the VVAW FBI files that shows some rank & file members/ chapters of the VVAW wanted Kerry out and saw him as only a political opportunist..serving his own agenda - ain't that a surprise

From the VVAW FBI files

Vietnam Veterans Against The War
Operation Dewey Canyon III
Bivouac in Washington DC April 19 -23, 1971

Demonstrations for the Immediate Withdrawal from Indochina
Activities include:
March to Arlington National Cemetary
Vigil at Capital
Guerrilla Theater
Lobbying Congress
Turning in of Medals

FBI Field Reports:

> Couple tidbits, read the pdf for more of the story

The illustrious Kerry is mentioned throughout the file as a leader of the event, however a most interesting item appears on pg 9
Quote:
The March 26, 1971 issue of the Evening Star contained an article ~snip~ which described John Kerry as a Vietnam Veteran who, in 5 months as a Navy Lieutenant, won the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and three purple hearts which he intends to hand back to Congress on April 23. The article stated that Kerry is the son of a former State department officer /pg9
>> Did we just catch Mr Kerry in little indiscretion with the truth?
Of late, when referring to the Medal Tossing incident, doesn’t he say that he didn’t actually throw his, because he
didn’t have them with him, and he didn’t have time to get them – so he tossed someone else’s?

Is he a fibber- or - a really bad planner. He said this to the press almost a month in advance of the event.

VVAW Sources of Funding $$ - Fonda / CPUSA
see
WinterSoldier.com
Timeline

October, 1970 -- Jane Fonda, Al Hubbard and Jan Crumb raise money for the VVAW and create new chapters through a nationwide lecture tour covering more than 50 college campuses. Fonda and Mark Lane also plug the VVAW during appearances on the Dick Cavett Show.

January, 1971 -- Jane Fonda raises funds for the Winter Soldier Investigation through a series of benefit concerts. Participants include Fonda, Dick Gregory, Donald Sutherland, Graham Nash, David Crosby and Phil Ochs. Fonda is named Honorary National Coordinator of the event.

August, 1971 -- The FBI opens a full investigation of the VVAW to "determine the extent of control over VVAW by subversive groups and/or violence-prone elements in the antiwar movement," noting that "sources had provided information that VVAW was stockpiling weapons, VVAW had been in contact with North Vietnam officials in Paris, France, VVAW was receiving funds from former CPUSA members and VVAW was aiding and financing U.S. military deserters. Additionally, information had been received that some individual chapters throughout the country had been infiltrated by the youth groups of the CPUSA and the SWP [Socialist Workers Party]." Veteran In Conflict
An article written for the LA Times Magazine about John Kerry and the Vietnam Veterans Against the War
by pro-Kerry historian Gerald Nicosia.

Lengthy article told from the point of view of the VVAW with information from FBI Files, the VVAW collection at the Wisconsin Archives, and interviews with some former VVAW members, including 2 interviews with John Kerry. The article touches on Kerry’s trips to Paris, and deals at length with the now noted November 1971 Kansas City Meeting, where the Phoenix Project was proposed.
LA Times Archiveshttp://www.latimes.com/features/printedition/magazine/la-tm-kerry21amay23,0,6525259.story?coll=la-headlines-magazine

Kerry originally denied attending the Kansas City meeting, until Nicosia's notes provided proof that not only was Kerry in Kansas City,
his wife Julia was as well! Nicosia also broke the story of Kerry's 2nd trip to Paris.

snippets here~~
Quote:
Kerry had been introduced to the VVAW in 1969 by his sister Peggy, but his attention was focused on running for Congress in Massachusetts at that point. After deciding not to run in 1970, he and his new wife, Julia Thorne, traveled to France in May to meet Madame Nguyen Thi Binh and other Viet Cong and Communist Vietnamese representatives to the Paris peace talks, a trip he now calls a "fact-finding mission."

Quote:
Winter Soldier "shattered" Kerry, he said to me in a 1988 interview. More than 100 veterans spoke. Kerry saw their discharge forms and talked with the vets enough, he said, to become satisfied that "most" were telling authentic stories

Quote:
The next month, in February, (1971) McCusker recalls walking into VVAW's national office in New York and discovering to his dismay that Kerry was in charge of the meeting…………., Kerry began sounding unlike an officer, talking about his Paris trip to meet the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong delegates and about his great respect for the Vietnamese.

Quote:
The files contain an array of his edgy political positions, including his statement in Philadelphia that "Ho Chi Minh is the George Washington of Vietnam." Southeastern VVAW coordinator Scott Camil says that he heard Kerry make the comment several times. Also in Philadelphia, according to the files, Kerry noted Ho Chi Minh's understanding of the United States Constitution and his efforts "to install the same provisions into the government of Vietnam."

Quote:
Kerry then called his friend Adam Walinsky, who had ties to the Democratic Party, and Walinsky led Kerry to the Seagram Building in New York for a meeting with Seagram CEO Edgar Bronfman, Rabbi Abe Feinberg, former Undersecretary of Commerce Howard Samuels, and other big Democratic Party fund-raisers. Kerry walked away with $50,000, which was forwarded to vets through the offices of Democratic Sens. George McGovern of South Dakota and Mark Hatfield of Oregon.

Quote:
Kerry's public image was perhaps tarnished most in 1971 by his attempts to hasten the return of American POWs. The files record that Kerry made a second trip to Paris that summer to learn how the North Vietnamese might release prisoners. The files also record that he held a press conference with relatives of POWs to accuse Nixon of "using the prisoners of war for political purposes." Other kin of POWs, backed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, showed up at the conference to denounce Kerry for using the prisoners for his own political purposes. "What are you running for now, Mr. Kerry?" one of them demanded. A newspaper account reported that the VFW regarded Kerry as "public enemy No. 1."

Quote:
Kerry had already been castigated by none other than the national commander of the American Legion, Alfred Chamie—also duly recorded in the FBI files. Chamie deplored the possibility that the Washington demonstration might cause the loss of "the vast treasure in lives and material already expended" on the war.

Quote:
But Kerry had tried to distinguish between his own trips to meet with the Vietnamese in Paris, which he considered necessary to fight through the lies of his own government, and actual negotiations with the enemy, which Kerry knew were illegal. There was no question now that Hubbard, as one of the other vets at the meeting puts it, "had gone over to the enemy side."

Quote:
Camil "was thinking like a Marine," he says, explaining that Marines were taught to "attack the head of the snake, not the tail."…………….At the time of the Washington march, Camil proposed "taking out" the prominent senators and congressmen who consistently voted in favor of the war. His assassination plan had little support, and he had put it aside as impractical. But now in Kansas City, in an effort to "push people's buttons" and "get them to forget about the crap" of burning Christmas trees, Camil says he again brought up his assassination plan, dubbed a "domestic Phoenix program

Quote:
Seeing an opening, Camil put his Phoenix plan on the table. Although a lot of the discussion is blacked out, there is reference in the documents to Hubbard and Camil being "closely aligned." There is also a passage suggesting that Hubbard proposed a variant of Camil's Phoenix program, which substituted kidnapping for killing:

Quote:
After Hubbard left, Camil's Phoenix proposal was voted on, and turned down—although, according to Camil, many members from Camil's southern following voted yes.

Quote:
Then another vet named Joe Urgo joined forces with Hubbard. Urgo had been to Hanoi the previous August and claimed to have met with many officials, including leaders of the North Vietnamese Army, with whom he spoke of making tapes for broadcast over Radio Hanoi to get American troops to stop fighting.

Quote:
There was also discussion of a proposal to encourage active-duty troops in Vietnam to extend the normal Christmas holiday truce by refusing to take up arms after the truce ended. Several vets objected to that as putting GIs at risk of being court-martialed.

Another image that stood out was of a ruggedly handsome young Navy veteran with a Silver Star, Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts telling the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the Vietnam War was an abomination, continued for the vanity of politicians while taking American and Southeast Asian lives for no good reason. That speech made Kerry a national figure, and he began speaking around the country. The FBI documents reveal that he earned as much as $1,200 plus expenses for a single appearance—a substantial amount in 1971.
