From the WSJ's Political Diary. Kerry is definitely consistent in one thing; Kissing Commie Ass!
Quote: | Kerry's Cuba Straddle
The narrow Bush victory in Florida in Nov. 2000 has another name: Elian's revenge. The return of the small boy to repression was not to be forgiven at election time, and Al Gore paid the price. Mr. Kerry understands this perfectly well and is now formulating a classically Kerryesque position on U.S.-Cuba policy: He's in favor of the embargo but, well, he's against it.
"Selective engagement, not isolation, is the best way for the American people to send real, not just rhetorical, hope for a better future to the Cuban people," he explained recently. He said he favors "principled travel" to Cuba, notably "travel for culture and advancement." Huh? "Principled travel" is what academics and liberals have been doing in Cuba for a decade. They eat well, are waited upon by Cuban slave labor and return to report on how tranquil Cuban society seems to be under Fidel.
The liberal intelligentsia relishes its visits to the tropical dictatorship where vacationing is cheap, safe and quaint. But Cuban-Americans who support the embargo are unlikely to be impressed with Mr. Kerry's nuance. Carlos Alberto Montaner, imprisoned in the early days of the Revolution and now a popular voice for Florida exiles, recently spelled out the lessons of the past decade of increasing traffic between outsiders and the Castro regime: "Cuban intelligence services have learned to associate with European and Latin American investors and have welcomed literally millions of Canadian, German, Spanish and Italian tourists, without modifying a single basic aspect of the communist model," he wrote in the Miami Herald. "Kerry, then, is Castro's candidate. Not because Castro thinks Kerry is pro-communist but because Kerry appears to be less risky than Bush and more convenient to guarantee the survival of Castro's regime."
Agree or disagree with the embargo philosophy, Mr. Montaner reflects the views of the Florida's exiles. If Mr. Kerry hopes to make a dent in this voting bloc, he'll have to convince it otherwise. |

I don't think Abe would be impressed by either John F. Kerry or the Ol' Swimmin' Instructor! _________________ Bye bye, Boston Straggler! |
