Man oh man....I've been thinking about hurricaine Camille ever since Ivan moved west of Cuba. All this talk about Vietnam and 1969 and here it comes around again. This one is really looking like Camille...only bigger.
Look at some of these pictures.

Good luck to everybody in Ivan's path. |

Anybody have any takes on the hurricanes in Florida and the election. Not to be callous or insensitive, but strategists have to take all this into account. Im from Massachusetts, but Ill take a stab on why this might help Bush:
1) I'd assume Floridians are sick and tired of all the drama, rebuilding and anxiety caused by the storms and are desperately seeking a return to stability and normalization, which would favor teh incumbent.
2) I'd suspect they dont give a rats ass about Vietnam, the National Guard or memogate or poltics in general. Poltical apathy tends to favor incumbents.
3) Jeb and W have been front and center throughout these hurricanes, while Kerry cant campaign in Florida without looking like an insensitive jerk.
I apologize of this type of hardball analysis offended peopel effected by the hurricanes. |

coolhand, no need to apologize to me, anyway. This is a war, and while my heart goes out to all those impacted by these hurricanes, everything needs to be considered.
I speculated earlier that another way this may affect the Florida vote is that the double dipping, twice voting Democratic voters (voted once in New York, via absentee ballot and once in Florida) might stay home past the election because of the clean-up efforts that will be on-going.
By the way, this double voting is a matter of public record. It was reported on, but because 68% of those who did that voted for Gore, it wasn't widely covered. Go figure.
Also, Republicans have made large gains in key counties, once held in control by Dems. Republicans also learned their lesson about letting Dems do all the grunt work of voting precincts, like being precinct chair, because that bit us on the butt in 2000.
Florida will go to Bush. (She predicts, with an air of confidence.) |
