I'm thinking that it might have been Ben Barnes himself who created and provided the fraudulent memos to CBS and USA Today. Hence Rather's reluctance to do an in-house CBS investigation.
Barnes had plenty of motive, was connected to the TANG and he probably new Killian and other top brass, and certainly he had the means to be the one to have created them.
If CBS were to reveal him as the source it would blow their entire 60 minutes two segment including Barnes' "testimony" about favoritism. As it is only the memos have been thoroughly discredited - but if Barnes is the source of those memos, then the entire segment would be. |

which would be ever damning to the DNC and Kerry's campaign being as Barnes is a co-chair in fund raising...

I think CBS is stonewalling for one of two reasons.
A. More explosive stuff is coming out and they are holding back the storm about the memos until then, hoping people forget the memos.
B. The source is so connected to Kerry that it would sink his campaign.
Actually, I'm betting the answer is A+B. However the cavalry (i.e. Kitty Kelly and the Air Force lie charge) has been DOA. I think that dam is getting harder for CBS to hold back right about now. |
