Somewhere in the recent past, a small group of Veterans (254 to be exact) took a deep breath, dusted off their uniforms, unburied their memories, rebandaged their wounds and took off on a journey that would re-live a part of their youth that was buried in silence, hurt and deep feelings of betrayal.

The stepped out into the American public that in the past betrayed them and discouraged them. They did this to share their experiences, because it was the right thing to do. They could no longer be silenced. They would no longer be silenced! The could not allow the American public to make a decision as important as their next Commander in Chief without knowing the full story.

They rose to the unspoken call to yet again serve their country. This time with truth instead of weapons, but with the same desire, to protect their fellow servicemen and their country. They knew that as they began this new journey, they were opening up wounds that were not fully healed. Allowing their personal lives and credibility to be open again to public speculation and took the risk of being spit on and scorned. Still they stepped forward. They stepped forward, knowing they were risking the very peace, no matter how hard won and how incomplete is is, to again embrace the country they love. The 254 Swift Boat Veterans stepped forward and I for one am thankful.

That first step had to be one that was filled with trepidation. I look back at what has been accomplished and what is still being accomplished. These Swift Boat Veterans didn't just accomplish exposing many inconsistencies and out-right lies of an individual seeking the highest position of authority within the United States. That isn't all they did. They did so much more and their impact will be felt long after their successful primary mission:

An awareness of the media, it's duplicity, it's tendency to manipulate the public with their truth instead of facts was more focused than ever before.

They allowed many who never served to share in their sadness of the treatment the received and to help spread the word. Their shared their knowledge and ultimately their deep love and respect for their country.

They provided a place where ideas could be shared and a place where many veterans could come and join their cry!

They provided an environment where maybe, just maybe, some of the hurts of the past can be healed.

They gave us hope.
