I've been boycotting French AND German wines for several years, not as much of a sacrifice as I expected. And beers too.

No w on to the technical questions. First. all our best wine grape varieties of the family vitis vinifera, were originally brought from various parts of Europe during the 1850s.
Then they started dying because of a root pest called phylloxera. We learned that we could graft the European vitis vinifera varieties onto American rootstocks, and then they would survive. A bit later, when the Europeans got a phylloxera infestation, they finally gave up and resorted to the same method.

For all the great Weasel wines ther are wonderful Amreican equivalents.
In 1972 ther was a historic event, when California sent over a bunch of its best wines to compete in a prestigeious competitive wine tasting in Paris. Under controlled conditions (wine identities concealed during judging) the French judges chose the Americans = We swept almost all the categories!!

Bordeaux - Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, and blends - from California, Washington State, Australia, and South America. Excellent quality at reasonable (sometimes great price).

Red Burgundy - Pinot Noir from Oregon (which in contorlled tasting bets Burgundy anyway), also from California and Australia - and a real surprise if you find it - Romania! (Premiat - I've seen it surpass French Burgundy).

French Rhone wines - Petite Syrah/Shiraz - California or Australia.

Also, well-made premium Zinfandel is the trhe American classic - and can substitute very well for Bordeaux on a menu.
We also grow other European rpremium ed grapes - Sangiovese, etc., which shold be tried.

Graves/White Bordaux - Sauvignon blanc from California or particularly Washington State. or Australia, or South America.

White Burgundy/Chablis/ Pouilly Fuisse, etc. - Chardonnay - California, Washington state, and if you're lucky to find it IDAHO. Also Virginai, Australia (often exceptional), South America, and italy.

Rhine and Mosel wines - Riesling from California, Oregon, Washington State(partiuclarly), Australia.
Chenin Blanc is not a German gape, but on our west coast it is bottled in a germanic-tasting style.

Sauternes - Any West Coast or Australian Late Harvest wine.

Champagne - see California, Oregon, Australia.

And Remember Australia is one of our most faithful allies - buy Australia!

And that brings to mind some other real bargains among our new allies.
Italy is still a friend and makes great wines - though no longer are the prieces reasonable.
Hungary used to be one of the great and prestigeous wine areas of the world. And their wines are starting to return to their previous standards. And except for Tokay/Tokaji the prices are still bargain barrel level.
Romanian and Moldovan wines are good quality and reasonable price, and are starting to be imported.
The ex-Soviet Republic of Georgia has been making wine for nearly 5000 years, and since the commies left, the quality has been reviving, and continually getting better. They are best known for red wines which are semi-sweet, and can be a delight to drink with grilled meats and chicken. Available in only a few areas, but if you see them - eremember that Georgia is an ally.
Croatia, got many of the best vineyards fo ex-Yugoslavia, and make wines ranging from good to excellent. Tehy make a Riesling that can stand in for Germans, and their reds are made from a grape related to our own Zinfandel, and are very worth a try.
Yes, Kimmymac, I said nothing about Texas - the few Texan wines I've tasted have been uniformly excellent, but I've seen them so rarely. Nobody outside of Texas is goig to find them, and Texans don't need to be told.
And finally. Aside from the great winestates of California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, there are local wines. 49 of the 50 states have at least one winery. Even Minnesota and South Duh-kota each have two or three wineries each.

As for beers, I laret you that genuine Czech and Polish, and Russian beers are all being imported, and can replace Weasel Brau. And under my roof they have Exclamation

So okay. Now get out there and BOYCOT - and support the not only the USA but our new friends as well!!

(Edited once) - I forgot to suggest letting Eastern Euorpoean (And AMerican Premium beers) also stand in for that chauvinist Molsons produced by the bleeping "snow weasels" Evil or Very Mad

Being stationed in Europe gives me a different perspective on things.

Let me say up front, that the stereotypes that we are making of the French are TRUE!! Laughing

The Germans don't like the French, the British don't like the French, the Italians don't like the French. Most of the French don't even like each other.

Their boycott of American products is laughable. It will have no effect on our economy.

The French are mad because they just don't matter in the big scheme of things anymore. Nobody takes the seriously anymore.

France and Germany are mad at us over Iraq, because they were selling goods and services to Iraq on credit that were banned under the UN sanctions. Now they will never get their money.

With all that being said, I still won't give up my BMW, it is, in my opinion, the finest all around motorcycle money can buy.

I don't know who all of the so called "EXPERTS" have been listening to.It's certain that they don't go to any of the pubs to really hear what the folk think.
It would be economic suicide for the Europeans to boycott America. They would be cutting off their noses to spite their faces. All the talk is from a bunch of nammby pamby socialist types who don't have any real clue about what makes the world tick. That and the liberal media who want you all to think that everybody hates you just because you're the most successful people on the face of the planet.
Tell me something. If America is so hated, then why does every body want to come here to live? Most of these blokes would give their left nuggie to be able to have the life you enjoy here. Mad

OK. BMW either stands for "Best Motorcycle in the World" or "Black
Mit White" depending on the age of the machine. I still have my '66
R-60/2 (with Globe GS 200 sidecar) sitting in my garage. Someday
I'll restore it.

The Globe GS 200 sidecar was made in India after they bought the
prints and manufacturing rights from Steib.

I was watching some German TV last night, and they had a couple of German economists talking about a European Boycott of American goods, and they both said that a serious boycott of goods and services from America would have no effect on America, but have a detrimental effect on Germany and Europe. Prices would go up, the buying power of the Euro would weaken, and unemployment could rise significently. BTW, the unemployment in Germany righ now is hovering around 16%!!

My wife just happens to be German, and the company she works for has customers world wide, but their largest customer is the US.....her boss, the owner of the company, has said repeatedly, that if the US customers take "their buisness" somewhere else, the company my wife works for will collapse and have to file for bankruptcy.

Hey Snipe if you wanna get rid of that R-60, I might want to take it off your hands....got any pics? Wink
