Isn't it interesting that when republicans use politics, it's 'childish behavior', but, when the dimocrats use politics, it's 'for the good of the country'. for the 40 some years that the dim's ruled congress where were all the dim voices chastising their congressmen for using 'childish behavior' politics. Like it or not, Mikest, politics will be played in DC as long as DC is around. It's just whose ox gets gored. We're dealing the cards now and dim's don't like it, so, it's politics as usual. I only have one question for you, Mikest. Do you think Kerry has acted well as a senator on behalf of his constituants in the last year?

I think there are very few honest polititions left on either side of the fence. But if you are going to attack someone, you should at least be honest about it. This vote was a ploy, plain and simple.

There is a debate going on in DC, I don't know where it is at now, about the way to pick successors to people who die. I think it is important and corralates to this. Currently, the Gov. of most states appoints the senator to replace the dead one. So if you have an elected dem or rep and the gov is from the other party, they can replace them with someone from their own party, thereby changing the makeup of the senate. That is what would happen in Kerry's case. Personally, I think that should be changed.

Mikest, i'm calling the question. As I asked before,

I only have one question for you, Mikest. Do you think Kerry has acted well as a senator on behalf of his constituants in the last year?

I think Kerry could have done a much better job, but I would have to see a list of votes missed, made and the vote counts for all of them. Since partisanship is at such a high and moderates of each party are so few and far between, there are very few votes that are open to a different outcome.

But my question to you is, do you agree that this was a political ploy that should not be done by either party?

I indeed agree that that is a ploy that should not be used. I would also add, though, that if Kerry had not missed so many votes, the opportunity for this political ploy would not exist. I think the ploy's plan was twofold.
1 - To provide the opportunity to publicize Kerry's numerous absenses
2 - Politics as usual, make him miss a couple of fund raisers.

...........

I guess it's newsworthy when he actually shows up for his taxpayer-funded job.

What is this - his first vote in more than 100 that he's missed?
I wonder if he actually knows what's in the bill that he's voting for? (Silly question)

This is rich: "Kerry claims that $350 billion of the $1.5 trillion America spends each year on health care is administrative overhead. His plan, he says, ``will save literally billions of dollars in healthcare costs in America by becoming more streamlined and more efficient.''

By "administration" I would imagine he means medical records, billing mechanisms, etc. How do you "streamline" medical records, especially since our growing body of medical knowledge (not to mention legal demands which I'm sure Kerry won't mention) demands more detailed records, not less detailed records?

Secondly, I'm sure Kerry would lump health information systems into "administration". Given that health care is pretty much the least computer integrated industry in the United States and requires hundreds of billions to fully implement vitally needed computerized patient records, how will Kerry "streamline" it?

Finally, I thought the purpose of HIPAA mandated standardized billing practices such as HL7 messages etc was supposed to make things "more efficient". The HIPAA effort has cost billions and will cost billions more before it's complete. Does Kerry want to scuttle HIPAA? Does Kerry know what HIPAA is? Does Kerry know anything at all about health care, or his experience limited to fleecing rich widows and dodging 90% of Senate votes?

I do know the answer to one question - Kerry won't be asked any indepth questions regarding his healthcare plan by the braindead, donkey-in-the-bag media.

Mike...Mike...Mike

There is nothing you can say or do to convince me that John Kerry actually cares about us vets or about anyone or anything other than himself. His political career started way before Vietnam and everything that (I hate to use this word) man has done has just been to promote his career and his run for the presidency. You need to take a look at John Kerry's record on defense. He had just about voted against everything (remember his infamous words...I voted for the 87 billion before I voted against it speech) for the military and defense. John Kerry is ranked as the TOP liberal in his voting record...beating out Teddy (hiccup) Kennedy. John Kerry is a disgrace and should not even been a candidate for the presidency.

This country seems to be leaning more and more to the left every day. My views may not be always that conservative, but I am open minded on some issues...but I still believe that we should be kind, we are responsible for our own actions, and that if we treat each other with a little courtesy and respect we can go a long way. I am tired of the people who are rude, obnoxious and downright mean spirited. I am tired of the angry people I see in both parties….I see more on the DNC side than I ever have on the republican side. I have seen the likes of the DNC accusing President Bush of being AWOL…but yet heard John Kerry say that Bill Clinton’s lack of any type of military record…actual draft dodger… was not important. I have seen the like of Al Gore screaming at the top of his lungs, looking nothing at all as presidential. I have seen the likes of Howard Dean foaming at the mouth. I have seen the likes of Nancy Pelosi calling President Bush nasty things and yet the DNC calls this partisanship. What the DNC has done this year pales compares to anything the republicans have ever done.

I always see where the republicans fire their own if anything they do is considered wrong. Remember Newt Gingrich, Trent Lott, Richard Nixon to name a few yet the DNC defends their own and allows them to remain in office….Bill Clinton, Teddy (hiccup) Kennedy, Robert Byrd…we could go on and on about this.

When it all comes down to it…John Kerry should not even be in the running for the office of the presidency. The reason swiftvets exist is because there are vets like me who are very offended this man is even running, let alone in senate. You will never, ever convince me that John “F” Kerry is anything but a man who lacks honor, principal, and will be wrong for this country.

Fair enough. I don't think either of our points are mutually exclusive. Maybe the rules should be changed so that the advantage doesn't go to the incumbant President. If a Senator or Congressman is running, they should be able to vote by phone, that way both have the same opportunity to campaign without the constraints.

Mikest,

Let's mark this day and time down. We agree on the ability of a presidential candidate, hell, any congessional candidate for that matter,
to be able to vote inabstentia. That might just create a whole new political climate and direction. I have to think about it some more, but, by golly,
you may have something there. Smile

I answered my own question by going to Kerry's appalling website - here's what the nitwit said in a speech in May:

"Today, each time you make a health care transaction, it costs up to $25. The same transactions in other industries, like a bank, cost less than a penny because of better technology. As President, I’ll bring better technology to our health care system, cutting costs for families and reducing the medical errors that cost lives."

Bringing better technology I assume means funding better technology, which will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. You're not going to save money that way John, and guess what - most of the health information systems in this country are legacy systems, not in any way integrated and are in the minority compared to systems that consist of good old paper and pencil. That's why health care transactions cost so much. And it's not going to be cheap to upgrade.

Kerry has no idea what he's talking about here. Is he as misinformed on other issues as he is on this one? Who dresses him in the morning?
