It seems to me that Kerry is not doing this because of strategy, but he has decided to be himself. I think the real John Kerry is finally standing up. Let me explain what I mean.
At some point Kerry became angry. It was probably a combination of things that made him angry. The Kennedy assasinations, the Vietnam war, whatever. He was without a doubt an angry young man when he came back from Vietnam to become an anti-war leader. Vietnam became to him, Nixon's war.
He's still angry. I heard him say early on to his supporters in the democratic primaries, when he was still way behind, "We need to get angry about these things."
I'm speculating to some extent, but I think in his mind Nixon was evil, Republican presidents are evil. Today he sees Bush as Nixon and he is taking out all of his rage that he still has against Nixon on Bush. This is his big chance for revenge, so he will say any nasty thing he can. He doesn't always even seem to care whether it helps or hurts him politically. It just feels good. To Kerry Iraq is George Bush's Vietnam. I think he finally gave his real opinion when he said that Iraq is the wrong war, at the wrong time, in the wrong place, and when he said it was a mistake. Echoes of Kerry in 1971.
Also, Kerry seems to be a narcissist. So the election is not about serving the American people. There is no vision, except the vision of his own glory. It seems to Kerry its all about me. "I can do better." "I have a plan."
Whatever strategy his aides might try to force on him, in the end Kerry can only be himself.
That's how I see it.
