Congratulations to Paul Bremer and the Iraqi Governing Council for a magnificent achievement! And, in a brilliant move, obviously designed to toss a monkey wrench into anticipated insurgency activity, they effected the change 2 DAYS EARLY!
Well done!

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The U.S.-led coalition transferred sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government two days early Monday in a surprise move that apparently caught insurgents off guard, averting a feared campaign of attacks to sabotage the historic step toward self-rule.
Legal documents transferring sovereignty were handed over by U.S. governor L. Paul Bremer to chief justice Midhat al-Mahmood in a small ceremony in the heavily guarded Green Zone. Bremer took charge in Iraq about a year ago.
"This is a historical day ... a day that all Iraqis have been looking forward to," said Iraqi President Ghazi Al-Yawer. "This is a day we are going to take our country back into the international forum."
Militants had conducted a campaign of car bombings, kidnappings and other violence that killed hundreds of Iraqis in recent weeks and was designed to disrupt the transfer, announced by the Bush administration late last year. Intially, the Americans were thought to have planned for about one more year of occupation.

Now lets just see how the Iraqi people deal with it. They have a once in a lifetime chance to get it right once and for all. This will take the wind out of the terrorists sail. Now they have to fight their own in the name of America and allah. Semper Fi. _________________ Helicopter Marine Attack Squadron 169 which is now HMLA-169. When the mission there is finished there will always be another one right around the corner. Just because Iraq is sovereign, does not mean the war is over.
Let's hope the "world community" wakes up and takes some responsibility in this war. We can do it, it would just take that much longer. We not only have to fight the terrorists, we have to fight the UN and all those appeasers. They have not given up trying to poke us in the eye every chance they get...
We're not out of the woods yet, but Iraq being sovereign is the best thing that's happened since the fall of communism (even that is still around). Maybe the best thing since WWII and the fall of Hitler.
I think they have the talent, determination and the one thing in our favor is they are well educated. They were allowed to attend college under Saddam (that's if he didn't kill you!) _________________ "From time to time, the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." -- Thomas Jefferson

I'm just wondering. How does 120,000+ armed troops and civilian contractors attached to construction work not subject to Iraqi law constitute "soveriegnty?" And under what authority does Bremer have to swear in anyone as a "Prime Minister?" |

Under the same type of agreements that have been in force in Germany, Japan, and Korea for as much as 60 years. Bremer swore in no one. Alawi was sworn in by the equivalent of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. If you want to debate please research your facts. _________________ On Sale!
