Here's a tidbit to chew on for a bit. Everyone knows about the electoral college and how it works. What if every state had 1 electoral college vote?
Why is California more important that Deleware? Why is Florida more important than Montana? Representation by population is already constitutionally assured via the census every 10 years. It can be adjusted accordingly every 10 years. If 10 years is too long, amend the constitution to lessen it. That would seem to be a pretty simple amendment that would pass pretty easily. Now, we have 50 electoral college votes. The popular vote is each state determines the electoral college vote. The only hitch is a 25-25 tie. Tiebreaker? National popular vote. Y'all's thoughts Question Wink

Because the founders sought to create a system that would maintain some semblence of balance regardless of what geographical changes or population shifts occurred.

Frankly, much like the jury system, it generally works surprisingly well.

except that the rural population is dramatically opposed in politics to the urban population. Take a look at that map someon posted of voting by county.

Rurals get screwed. Sad

Exactly my point Indianbaboon! A large number of the folks in this country who don't live in the big urban areas feel disenfranchised living in a rural area/state that doesn't carry the big electoral college votes and are virtually ignored. I beg to disagree with you, Nakona, on the system working well. The only folks who have access to candidates via means other than the alphabet news channels are those who live in the more populous states. It is sad to hear all over my state of South Carolina that folks just don't want to vote because it means nothing. Obviously it does, but, the point is that is the perception most folks have here. Now, local elections, 60% turnout is dissapointing. Like Tip said, all politics is local.
That's one statement from a democrat I totally agree with. Imagine for a moment that Idaho carried the same weight as Florida. Can you imagine the candidate scramble in an election year? I shudder to think sometimes how many folks in the rural areas would vote at all if the only item on the ticket were the presidential race. I would venture a guess to say that 30% of voters in rural states would turn out. What would be the point? 1 electoral college vote? Granted this last election was peculiar in that respect.

And how do you suppose the people in the big urban centers feel?

pretty good from what I've seen.

they've got rurals backed into a corner with all their PC garbage. We are the new hitlers in their eyes:

anti-gay marriage=prejudiced
anti-abortion=sexist
anti-open border=racist
anti-affirmative action=racist
anti-welfare=racist/heartless
anti-gun control=crazed hicks with too much explosive

They've pretty much managed to shut us up in the political arena. You know, just for engaging in a public debate with pro-choice people, and having the audacity to get BOTH sides clapping for my pro-life views, a local band wrote a song titled Death to the CCFL my organization.

We have been completely gagged by the urbanites. They should be feeling pretty good by now.

Forgive me,

But, didn't the "rural vote" in electoral college terms override the "urban vote", even though it didn't manage the popular vote in 2000?

The states that voted for Bush weren't the most populated ones, but the "either/or" system - win the state, win the Electoral College votes - system gave GWB the election (despite what's posted on **).

"Disenfrachised" means living in a state like Massachusetts, which hasn't given its electoral votes to a Republican since Reagan (as best I remember).

We've been gagged by children of wealthy urban elitists who have been educated by self-declared elitist Marxists in our educational system. They're brain-dead egalitarians working for 60's era Marxists in the media centers of New York, Washington, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The media in this country is marxist/socialist. The anti-American crap is really anti-freedom and anti-capitalist crap. One man to blame in relatively recent history....Carl Marx.

The really sad thing is that for his place and time in history Marx was probably more right than wrong. Only problem is that this is not the mid-19th Century in Monarchal Europe. The real conservatives in our society are the left wing Marxists that don't understand the changes that have occurred in 150 years. And what is that....a swing back to personal liberty.

Scott, sorry. I'm thinking ahead. I'm barely 20. And i see the pattern of what's happening. urbanization is running amok, democrat pandering to 'minorities' is on the rise.

The rurals are abt to be overrun Sad

That said, god Scott, i sympathize for you. Having spent three years in the north east, i know how disenfranchised conservatives up there get.

Indianbaboon;

Keep the faith. Whether the Electoral College was invented to prevent the tyranny of the megalopolis or not, Wink it's keeping the urban "Great Unwashed" from overwhelming the midwestern "Great Unwashed." Rolling Eyes (Not to mention the rest of us!)

The Elites, on the other hand, are infuriated that the "great unwashed", wherever, don't acknowlege their intellectual supremacy.

There's hope, yet.
