John Kerry's Navy Cap

This auction is for a United States Navy Cap Stratosphere Wolbro size 7 1/4, Feather Weight. This cap was given to me by a friend and former Cambodia military officer who says it was given to him by a young swift boat captain in Cambodia during Christmas in 1968.

I have not been able to verify the authenticity of my friend's claim, but he says the day he received this cap is seared into his memory. From accounts he has read by John Kerry himself, he is certain it was John Kerry that gave him the cap. I am also unable to verify this as all reference to Kerry having spent Christmas in Cambodia has for some reason been removed from the Kerry website.

There is at least one conflicting detail in my friend's story. My friend says he was on the other side the Cambodia border when Kerry threw the cap over to him. He thought for certain it was Kerry's own cap. However, someone else's name appears on the inside of the cap. Kerry may have thrown someone else's cap over the border and not his own.

Despite this nuance, bidders should note that like metals and ribbons, caps are interchangeable. Even if it is someone else cap, it is the same thing.

The cap is in very good condition with no bullet holes or signs that the person who originally wore it had been under enemy fire. It is in remarkably good condition, most likely having been worn for no more than four months.

The Size of the cap is 7 1/4.

The bill is straight with no creases and is shinny dress black in the finest of navy tradition. All stitching is unflawed even if the stories surrounding its former owner's service to country are coming unraveled. The front emblem is untarnished even if the metals that once accompanied it (see photo at left) are not. The white part of the hat is in good condition with no rips or tears.

The inside of the cap has a leather head band that appears new and in excellent shape without any sign of perspiration staining. The underside of the bill is flawless. The inside liner is new and in excellent condition. The plastic liner in the top of the cap shows only minor signs of yellowing from age.
