Drudge says it's been reported, no confirmation. Let's at least wait for confirmation before we get excited. What is this? About the third time it's been rumored.

I'm NOT believing it until either Bush, Rumsfeld or the Senior US Field Commander calls a press conference and issues a formal announcement of the event. Until this happens it is just so much web rumor.

DUBAI, January 4 (Itar-Tass) - Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, whom the US occupation authorities declared to be the "target number one" in Iraq, has been arrested in the city of Baakuba, the Emirate newspaper al-Bayane reported on Tuesday referring to Kurdish sources. Al-Zarqawi, leader of the terrorist group Al-Tawhid Wa'al-Jihad, was recently appointed the director of the Al-Qaeda organisation in Iraq.
The newspaper's correspondent in Baghdad points out that a report on the seizure of the terrorist, on whom the US put a bounty of 10 million dollars, was also reported by Iraqi Kurdistan radio, which at one time had been the first to announce the arrest of Saddam Hussein.
There have been no official reports about the arrest of the terrorist. Al-Zarqawi, 38, a Jordanian, whose real name is Ahmad al-Khalayleh, aims to turn Iraq into a "new Afghanistan". According to Arab press data, Al-Tawhid Wa'al-Jihad group has divided Iraq into several emirates. The group's independent subdivisions at a strength of 50 to 500 militants operate in the cities of Al-Falluja, Al-Qaim, Diala, and Samarra.
The personnel of the group is on the whole 1,500-strong and includes Iraqis and citizens of Arab and Islamic countries. There are demolition experts and missilemen among them.
The group has depots of weapons and explosives in various parts of the country. It intends to frustrate the upcoming parliamentary elections that are scheduled for the end of this month. Al-Tawhid Wa'al-Jihad threatens to do away with Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi and members of the interim government. |

I dunno guys. I am still hopeful on this. There are a few reports out there on this and they aren't going away, although they are being updated occasionally.
The source that is reporting this (the ORIGINAL source, not Tass) is the same source that first broke the Saddam capture. The sources that are picking it up are some pretty big names in overseas news. ITAR-TASS, Xinhua, China Daily were on this early and have not backed off, but acknowledge it has not been confirmed.
I'm not sure how long they would want to kep this under wraps, or how long they would intend to. You know if they announce his capture Ramsey Clark and friends are going to want to see him immediately. The liberals will be up in arms if we put a hood on him or made him do the naked pyramid. I think they want a lil' play time with this one.

I used to work at a jail, and I know that a lot of things can happen on the way to the jail after the arrest. Many prisoners seem to trip and fall and get all banged up. There seems to be a high accident rate in the back seat of the patrol car. A surly prisoner (detainee) seems to have even more trouble. There also seems to be a problem where the patrol car takes a long time to get to the jail. I don't understand it. I guess the real Billy Badass guys are accident-prone.
Another thing. I worked at a Marine Corps brig in Philadelphia as a brig chaser. (Petty Officer armed escort) and there was this stairway from the Lobby to the guest accommodations. It was like a sally port. here was a locked door top and bottom and no one could see into the stairway. Well darn it all if those bad actors didn't have trouble navigating that stairway. In at the bottom on both feet, out at the top limping and all doubled up. Another unfortunate case of bad luck I guess. (Semper Fi)
Well anyway, I just hope that bozo is arrested and he turns out to be awkward and clumsy. He could have more than one accident on the way to the station house. The strangest things can happen.
Oh well, one of these days I might figure it out.

I'm sure that the US would be very cautious before announcing the
capture of such an important target. They would make very sure
that the person captured was really al-Zarqawi by doing DNA testing
and other things to verify his identity - all of which take time.

| I just woke up so I can 100% guarantee what I think I heard, but I'm almost positive I heard them report on Fox they caught this guy. They said they caught him the day after the suicide bombing in Mosul. I sure hope this is true. I know it is not an end to the violence, but this guy is pure evil. |
