I would recommend taking the time to read the entire guestbook. It's illuminating.

Seems there are a lot of tears being shed over his death at a place that rhymes with P U as well.

It's sad when any Veteran goes, especially a highly decorated one like Col. Hackworth. I don't know why his attitude turned the way it did, either from pride or just sick of what he was having to do. I can't say anything against the man, though, as long as he was following what his true conscience was.

I can only pray that he rests in peace and send my condolences to his family and loved ones.

I am sad at the passing of a true war hero. I did not know that he was
so ill. I respect and admire Hack for his service, but I have a confession
to make. I live in the home of Camp Lejeune USMC Base, so our local
paper strives to publish articles of interest to active duty and retired
military. Col. Hackworth's column appeared every Thursday and I am
secretly glad not to have to read his usually negative comments any
more. I would get so frustrated at some of them. I understand that the
US Military has its faults, but I wish Hack had chosen to use his brilliant
military mind to improve things from within rather than criticize them so
stridently-especially during a time of war. Every week, I would turn to
his column in the hopes of finding that he had something good to say.
Last week's column, oddly enough, was much more positive and I really
enjoyed reading it. Maybe he sensed that it was one of his last. BTW,
Hack NEVER failed to give credit to and to praise the US soldier. His
argument was with the military brass and the Bush administration.

May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family and friends during
their time of grief and loss.

His service record was unimpeachable, but damn I disagreed with his views of America and todays war on terror.

May he RIP and God Bless him for his service to our country.

The best soldier period. I would say "among" but I can't think of anyone comparable. I knew a spec/6 in Alaska with more decorations, but 89 of them were air medals for 5 years of combat flight as a gunner in a cobra in the nam. So he had more that 92 including road guard, fireguard vietnam campaign, maybe an ARCOM with valor or something. Can't remember exactly.

First paragraph of the link:
Washington, D.C., May 5, 2005 – Col. David H. Hackworth, the United States Army's legendary, highly decorated guerrilla fighter and lifelong champion of the doughboy and dogface, ground-pounder and grunt, died Wednesday in Mexico. He was 74 years old. The cause of death was a form of cancer now appearing with increasing frequency among Vietnam veterans exposed to the defoliants called Agents Orange and Blue

... exactly what kind of cancer is this? I'm unaware that I've directly exposed to Agent(s) Orange and/or Blue, but after 2 diagnoses (and subsequent surgeries), for 2 distinctly different cancers, I'm naturally curious.
(In case anybody is getting their hopes up, neither is going to be immediately fatal Razz )

You might check with the VA for the particular cancer(s) associated with Agent Orange.
