M1917A1 was the military designation for a .30 cal water cooled heavy machine gun.
I don't know his name but this evidently meant something special to him and I respect his right to be known by it.
He will be missed.

His street name was Gary E. DeLoach. I identified him as M1917A1 because that is how he was known and distinguished himself in ths forum.
Some of us post by screen name because we feel a need to keep our identities private, and others because we have become generally associated with a particular screen name. Rurik has posted under his name at a number of on-line venues, and suspects that posting as George Mellinger would be a form of concealment to those who know Rurik.
I learned M1917A1's full street name only a few weeks ago, and by happenstance. Still he and his wife became my dear friends, under whatever name.
M1917A1 was also the Colt .45 automatic pistol , and coincidentally, according to his wife, his special MOS number. I know, it doesn't sound like a familiar MOS stule number to me either, but then I wasn't ASA, and there's lots of things I don't understand.

As a newbie, I did not know our departed comrade in Arms. But as he is but one of many in this band of brothers we all share. I salute his being one of us and among us and offer our sincere comfort those he left behind.
