Senator Santorum reveals the unclassified summary of a recently classified Pentagon report. At least 500 munitions containing degraded liquid mustard gas and Sarin have been recovered in Iraq. The 500 number includes some projectiles not loaded with agent (estimated at about 25% of the 500).
Santorum will expand on this tonight on Hannity & Colms.
(From Fox News broadcasts)
Edit: Seems that these were Iran-Iraq war leftovers. If true, this will provide some fig leaf for Dems.

Iran-Iraq leftovers or not, would that stuff still be viable and employable? |

If nothing else, this stuff was what Sadam was supposed to have destroyed and reported destroyed, so this proves he didn't.
And somehow or another none of those weapons inspection teams found it, either.
It's probably not the "silver bullet" we all want (I personally think those are in Syria), but it's not inconsequential either. But of course the MSM will try to minimize it. |

The mustard would probably have jelled, making it less effective as a lung agent but, in skin contact, it would be even more effective. The Sarin would retain much, if not all, of its lethality.
Since we do not know the condition of the casings or whatever the agents were in, its hard to say if they would withstand setback forces in a field artillery launch but the agents could certainly be off-loaded and used in a different vehicle, e.g., IED.
The Dems are no doubt working up their responses which will boil down to "these don't count" but they do count. Saddam's guys hid them and didn't reveal them to inspectors and they fit the definition of WMD. It doesn't take much Sarin to kill a whole lot of people.

I forced myself to listen to NPR through two cycles of "news" this morning. Breathless reporting on dead soldiers and details of the efforts of certain senators to have us bug out.
Not one word on the WMD find.
I searched the NPR web site thoroughly. Nothing. Your taxpayer dollars at work.

Last night on Hannity and Colmes Shawn got what's his nuts....Al Sharpton to say that he would apologize to President Bush for calling him a liar if the reports about the WMDs are true.
Ya'll reckon we should hold our breaths waiting for that apology?

It is a sad commentary on our society that any of Al Sharpton's utterances might be deemed to be of value. I suppose you might need to have been a New Yorker directly subjected to the "Tawana Brawley" spectacle to fully appreciate Sharpton's character or lack thereof. |

Also on H&C last night, LGen McInerney (USAF, ret.) reiterated the story related by a Saddam defector (whose name I can't remember) about eleventh-hour panic shipments of the bulk of WMD to locations in Syria and the Bakaa Valley of Lebanon. There seems to be strong evidence that Russia, France and perhaps China participated in the transport. McInerney is a level-headed troop with lingering connections to DOD and probably would not repeat this if not a feasible scenario.
He also pointed out that this caper, if true, could give the Bush administration a migrain or two. Three "allies", all members of the UN Insecurity Council? Good grief.

Allies.....schmilies. Those allies are patting us on the back with one hand and plunging the dagger in deep with the other.
Their duplicity is too evident in their actions to be ignored or dismissed.
When are we going to start calling a spade a spade and quit pussyfooting around. Diplomacy is one thing. Being stupid is not good diplomacy.

When talking about how lethal these WMDs are, I think of the Pueblo Chemical Depot. I was a kid when it was the Pueblo Army Depot.......during WW2.
Just do a Google on this subject. Here is one.
http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/facility/pueblo.htm
Do a Google Earth and you can find an aerial view of these thousand igloos. 38 degrees, 20’52.74 N and 104 degrees 18’57.61”. In the upper right section is the secure area with American and Russian signs all over the place. Up until a few years ago, you could drive onto this complex. It is closed again.
They have yet to come up with a viable means of disposing of these munitions. They may be “degraded” in terms of their chemical condition or the casings themselves, but they are still very nasty. The incinerator method has been on hold for a very long time. Our family farm is about 5 miles south of the facility and there are gas detectors spread out all over the place in case of leakage of the chemicals in their current state or if the proposed incinerator leaks.
All residents within a 10 mile radius have special radio receivers that would be used to broadcast alerts if there were any leakage from the incinerator.
Everything is on hold regarding the incinerator because of environmentalists and their concerns.
As previous posters have said, this stuff is nasty. I don’t care how old it is. _________________ "A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can put on his shoes." Mark Twain

As was brought on Rush this morning, if these WMDs found are so aged that the left feels they are mostly ineffective now, why did the left raise such cain about similar munitions being stored throughout the US a few years ago? Seems they felt they were pretty dangerous then. |

Someone on the radio this morning (maybe Boortz) suggested that each Dem senator be given one of these 'ineffective' rounds to keep in his garage as a souvenir.
From my dictionary: "Souvenir - something to serve as a reminder; memento"

Currently, the Anniston Army Depot here in Alabamastan has an operational chemical weapons disposal installation. The shell casings are drilled and the contents drained and incinerated. (Wonderful place to work.) The facility operates in fits and starts, the goal of burning everything in the inventory by 2004 long past. The EPA is (rightly) concerned about safety and the plant operates only occasionally.
From what I can surmise, the guys dispose of the rounds found in Iraq by simply blowing them up with C4 out in the desert. The agent Sarin is totally ruined by heat and if the detonation heat doesn't do the job, it degrades fast in ambient air. The EPA doesn't seem to have a field office there.
