Terry, I've never met anyone who ever got drunk enough to actually eat balut - except my husband. Shocked

I probably don't owe him a lot of credence when he compliments my cooking, do I? Wink

Terry, yes you did.

N3, yes you have.

Balut vendors are to 3 AM as ice cream vendors are to 3 PM....

Terry and NNN,
I refuse to eat those half-grown duck eggs (balut) too, but my wife and a half dozen of so of her friends love them. They are hard to obtain in here though, but about once every year or two they manage to get a dozen or so and have a feast.
At least they aren't eating those grey colored eggs that have fermented buried in dirt for six or eight weeks. I remember my counterpart in Viet Nam eating those. What an odor! Actually they are available here if you go looking. Thank god, my wife doesn't care for them.
Jack

There's this oriental grocery store in Peoria that sells them. I buy a lot of stuff there but not baluts. Want a nice bowl of miso soup?
Very Happy

Oh, mercy, Squidly, you're just plain crazy, ain'tcha?

Jack, I think I have the names mixed up - I thought the fermented eggs were balut?

Just the idea of either one of them hovers somewhere on the edge of my gag reflex! Laughing

But, they have them in Peoria... will wonders never cease?

EJ,
I've seen literally dozens of dozens of these baluts come through my kitchen over the past 3-1/2 decades. The balut are the duck eggs with the chicks matured just short of having feathers (evidently they're no good if they get to the feather stage) (for the Mony Python fans, it's probably a little like crunchy frog.) The hundred year eggs (also called century eggs) are the ones buried in acidic black soil and fermented until the shell thins and they turn grey colored.
And you are 100% correct. The idea of either one of them does indeed hover on the edge of my gag reflex too.
Jack

I just hope you are all happy. My breakfast is ruined. No way can I go fry me some eggs now cause I'll keep thinking about half growed ducklings and seriously rotten eggs.
Yuckiness.

streetsweeper95B,
I've had 36+ years of living with a Vietnamese lady whom I love dearly. Nothing surprises me anymore. Years ago, when friends would compliment her cooking and ask where she shops for some of the more exotic and difficult to obtain ingredients, I would jokingly say, "The Bait Shop."
Then, one day she and one of her friends came home with shrimp, lobster and blue crabs obtained at a price that I couldn't believe (they were so cheap). When I inquired where they got them, it actually turned out that they got them at the local bait shop. So now I can't use that joke anymore.
There are nastier egg delicacies than balut and century eggs. You don't want to know.
Jack

I didn't notice it. I haven't been here for days . I have been working on a local election. We defeated a democrat running for mayor whose campaign was financed by the huge tax and spend governor of Michigan. Need to send a message to Lansing for her not to get comfortable in that office.

I've been that drunk; I can still hear the "crunch" sound in my mind. I don't eat peanuts, because the sound is identical.

Thanks for the fouled anchor. I didn't even have to eat balut.

I do not know if you spelled balut correctly, but the thought of that is "fowl" I could never, never have gotten that drunk.
