I’d like to know how he came to be on that boat in the first place? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been in some strange places as a Special Forces soldier, but I never required rescue for falling into the water.

I have a little sketchy anecdotal info on this. Rassman was an advisor to Nung Popular Forces in the region. COSDIV11 was tasked with transportation assistance for these troops in sweeping certain areas for local VC insurgents.
There are apparenty no records, but it's believed that Rassman deployed with COSDIV 11 boats on no more than 5 or 6 occasions while Kerry was in country.
Although Kerry and Rassman claim that Rassman was on the 94 boat on 13 March 69, others are saying he was on the 3 boat which was hit by the mine. To understand this testimony see "EXTRA EXTRA" above.
