Who is the next one on my check in sheet
I started my Naval Service in 1976 and retired in 1996. My first ship USS San Bernardino LST 1189; I was a Gunners Mate after completing a year in deck dept. and 90 days of mess cooking. GMGC Garcia and the Master Chief (CMC) Westcott was conduction the XO's messing and berthing, during my break I was completing my GMG 3 and 2 courses. All the other mess cooks were sack out on different benches and seat. When I completed mess-cooking duties one day I went up to the gun mounts to get some practical factors done. The whole gun crew was removing a loader motor out of Mount 31, (Subic Bay liberty) So I started helping. When I got done mess crankin, I reported to 2nd division and was told that I was no longer in 2nd and to report to 3rd division, 19 year years later I retired as the last GMG1, (they combined rates to the good ole GM.) about 60 days before I retired but NMPC honored my request to retire as a GMG.
The following is a list of the commands I served with
USS San Bernardino LST 1189 1976-1980 (Three West Pacs) floated off of Afghanistan and Iran and was actually 90 miles away from Iran when the Hostage rescue attemp was made. USS Cleveland LPD 7 TAD 4 months.
Naval Mobile construction battalion 4 (TAD for four months) 1980-1981 (deployed to Rota Spain) was sitting on Armory duty when the hostages where released and returned to the States
Naval Mobile construction battalion 5 one deployment 1981-1982 to Rota and one Short deployment to Puerto Rico. (finished shore duty requirements)
Naval Station Treasure Island shore duty. Base police. I was selected to be a bodyguard for John Glenn in the 1984 Democratic convention, but he dropped out of the Race and Ronald Reagan won anyway. (I got a lot of cool training) 1982-1984
USS Pluck MSO 464 1984-1989. We’d be Sweepin Sweepin.
TAD to USS Esteem MSO-437 Persian Gulf rotation 90 days
(went to the USO show that Bob hope did first time Lee Greenwood sang that song in public, Barbara Eden was leaning over the stage and her shirt was gaping and no bra, “nice boobs” she caught me looking, lots of Military guys singing happy birthday to Connie Francis, daughter. (Because of this I was paid special attention later))
TAD to USS Enhance MSO-435 Persian Gulf rotation 120 days (Iran Iraq war)
I both of these ships where awarded the combat action award.
Special Boat unit 13. 1989-1991 PB755, Sea Specter 65ft PB I was POIC. Dick Chaney came to town as Secretary of Defense and my boat was in better shape and he jumped on board my boat. He was suppose to ride SBU 12’s boat, the Commodore chewed the LT OIC of 12’s PB and told him he had two days to make his boat look like mine. A couple of months later I opened my mouth when I should not have a made 2nd class again.
USS Ranger CV61 1991 to 1993. Two Deployments cruises, Just missed Desert Storm, but took part in Restore Hope and the relief of Somalia. Was Command Advanced to first class (the Gun Boss liked me and told the Captain DV McGinn to CAP me, So I made First class again but kind of sealed my fate of not making GMC. After the Ranger was decommissioned I left after being POIC of the cleanup crew of the barrack barges.
USS Rushmore LSD 47, 1993-1996. What a nice clean gator. Did two Deployments to the PG
I retired with 30% disabilities and the VA said what do you want me to do? I said computers sound real good, went to school for 8 months and worked contact jobs for about two years and finally became a computer specialist for the Fleet and family support center. After three years I was asked by the Ritcs help desk manager to come over and run VTC (video telephone conferencing equipment) for the Admiral And I’ve been there for a Year now. I think San Diego is about the best place to live, but I’m from Southern California so I might be a bit partial. _________________ I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all.
