You, know, in a way, this is all really kind of funny. The Democrats totally reorganized the way they hold their primaries with the express intent of choosing a candidate by early March. Their idea was to reduce the infighting between opposing candidates and to give the "anointed one" more time to campaign against President Bush. So, they had a rush to judgement and picked Kerry, which I think was pretty much a surpise to everyone. As I recall, even as late as January of this year, everyone was pretty much giving the nomination to Howard Dean. Anyway, this has given groups like the Swiftvets time to organize and get their message out. And despite whatever they may say in public, yuo can believe that the top people in the DNC are not at all happy with the way things are turning out. I'll bet there has even been some consideration of ways to get John Kerry off the ticket and bump John Edwards up a notch. I don't REALLY expect it to happen, but if some of Kerry's tame Swifties were to 'fess up and the poll numbers changed to something like 65/35 for President Bush, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them try it. Even as late as September.
And what I find funny about all of this is that none of it would have happened if they had followed the old fashioned formula. If Kerry was popping out as a front runner with no choice to be made before July, the Swiftvets message likely would have gotten out in time for the Democrats to dodge the bullet. Or maybe we wouldn't have even gotten started until after the convention and then the time would have been too short to get all of this rolling before the election. Either way you look at it, they screwed up.
I'll take bets, no matter how this election turns out, that the Democrats switch back to something more like the old rules for 2008. |
