I was with the 7/17 Air Cav when it deployed from Ft.Knox, via the USS Walker, to Camp Enari, Central Highlands. Put in a year with S4, humping
2.75" rockets and other nice shiny ammo out to the chopper revetments,
cause you can't blow nothin' up without lots of ammo.
Had so much fun that I extended another 6 mos. and transfered down
to the 196th ASHC, An Son, for the left door of a Chinook.
ETSd May '69, with the esteemed rank of SP4, some Air Medals, a wart
on my crank, and no politics other than a vague feeling that people who
think war is a really neat idea, have never been in one.
The whole experience was priceless, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else at that time of my life. I'm proud to be a U.S. Veteran, and
glad those VC rascals always missed me. |

Saw the topic and read the thread... so this is a segue of sorts (feel free to move it to G&S!):
<antidotal>
A USAF fighter jock found after a trip to town, he'd brought some number of small friends with him... he was scheduled for a mission on arrival, so no time for the Flight Surgeon if he were to fly (he'd be "grounded" for treatment of the "stow-aways"). He quickly went to the BX, got himself a flea collar and proceeded to fly his assigned mission. Upon return to base, he checked into the FS's office where the surgeon on duty proclaimed the li'l critters KIA... and was promptly told: "That's original. Effective. Don't do it again!"
