I've blogged at my usual longwinded length about the WaPo article and Mr. Thurlow's excellent response, and just added an update with Mr. Odell's and Mr. Chenoweth's statements as well: http://beldar.blogs.com/beldarblog/2004/08/wapo_reports_on.html

Mr. Thurlow's published response (which I quoted in full on my blog) is terrific. But looked at closely and with a clear head, Mr. Thurlow actually did just fine in the WaPo story itself. As I wrote in my blog post:

Quote:
To his credit, WaPo reporter Dobbs apparently confronted Thurlow with the language from his citation to get his reaction before running the story, and to his further credit, he included Thurlow's reaction in the story:

Quote:
"It's like a Hollywood presentation here, which wasn't the case," Thurlow said last night after being read the full text of his Bronze Star citation. "My personal feeling was always that I got the award for coming to the rescue of the boat that was mined. This casts doubt on anybody's awards. It is sickening and disgusting."

Thurlow said he would consider his award "fraudulent" if coming under enemy fire was the basis for it. "I am here to state that we weren't under fire," he said. He speculated that Kerry could have been the source of at least some of the language used in the citation.

Note that well: Thurlow's initial reaction wasn't to defend himself or his medal. Rather, it was quick agreement that if his own Bronze Star was indeed premised on the notion that he'd been under enemy small arms fire, then he didn't deserve the medal, because that didn't happen.

Like John O'Neill, I've been in the business of exposing liars on the witness stand for a couple dozen years or more, and Mr. Thurlow's reaction to the "gotcha!" by the WaPo reporter was not characteristic of the way almost any liar would've reacted.

The reason the follow-up statements were appropriate wasn't so much what the WaPo piece itself said, but the way it was being spun by Kerry's allies. I actually emailed the WaPo reporter with some kind remarks, a link to my blog post, and strong encouragement to keep digging. Others may be more upset with Dodd's performance than I am; but remember, it's the predictably liberal, predictably pro-Democratic Party WaPo we're talking about here. If you expect "absolutely fair," you're always going to be disappointed.
