With regards to the protests and harassment that VVets received, could anyone explain what the "mood" was like in Japan? Did military personnel encounter protests and harassment overseas like they did in the states?

The reason I ask is that while I was just a little kid at the time, some pretty ugly things happened to my family while we lived in Yokosuka. I am not sure if it was due to Vietnam or if it was lingering hatred from WWII.

Can anyone shed some light on your experiences or recollections?

It depends upon the time period in which you lived there.

I do recall reading a story of Marines having to guard the base schools when anti-US military sentiment would rise up.

It was 1973-1976. My father was on the Midway. My schools were on base and I don't remember anything happening there.

However, once, while traveling in Tokyo on the trains, a man deliberately pushed my mother down the steps in one of the stations. I was only 5, my brother was 3. The man laughed afterwards and picked up something she had dropped and tossed it to her. We were also ran off the road once.

For the most part, the people were very nice when we ventured out. I am glad that I was very young and overseas most of the time that this all took place.
