Fascinating reading. Did time with the 82nd and XVIII Abn 84-88, been riding the waves as a Coastie since 92. Currently thanking my lucky stars the rivers over here in Iraq are a hell of a lot quieter than the stories I read here.

I signed up for the Navy during between my junior and senior year of highschool. I wasn't medically qualified because I had "Fallen Arches" so I went to my doctor and he sent BUMED a letter saying my feet didn't hurt. I finally made it through my medical screening, letter in hand in October of 1990 set to ship out for basic after graduation from HS in July. The recruiters were pushing a 2x4 contract, 2 years active duty, 4 years reserve, full GI Bill. I took it and went in as a deck seaman. I served on the USS St. Louis under Captain Jack Londot, a great man and a great leader. When he took command of my ship he began his 40th year in the navy. Going from E-1 to E-8 then O-1 to O-6. He was litteraly the old man but he could arm wrestle the strongest of us and win.

We decommissioned the St Lou. and I transferred to the USS Germantown. Commanded Bray was my CO there. Another great assignment. I struck out of deck to help with decom of the Lou and one day after my 2nd year of service I was frocked to PN3. Reserve duty was tougher PN2 was closed up for the whole time I was eligible to test for it and they discovered these contraptions called computers to do all of our work on.

My medals were standard issue National Defense, Battle E, Sea Service Deployment. Nothing everyone else on my ship didn't get.

Something about having served gives me an affinity towards vets. My best friend back then flew from Texas to my wedding in Michigan last August after not having seen each other since June 93.

I can understand these guys standing by John Kerry and I don't deride there service.

I do appreciate the Swifties who are standing up to the character assassinations of the Johns and Kerry's daughters. The daughters ironically are complaining about our fellow vets "attacking daddy's moral character" in my view, I think they are defending their own moral character from Tour of Duty and the fullbright commission.

Fair winds and following seas.

In a way, I took part in the operation that basically closed the Doors and chapter of Cambodia and Vietnam. (Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind)

I have seen what its like when the Nations lose its will to fight or ran away. Not a pretty sight, lots of chaos. We cannot ran away, this is our country.

USA has been attacked, 2x (1996, 2001) at NYC. The terrorist drew first blood and Pres. Bush brought the fight into thier back backyard and front door. USA does not have to wait for or pacify countries like France and Russia. Pres. Bush acted with the best interest of USA.

I don't think Sen. Kerry has that same fortitude and neither does his running-mate Sen. Edwards.

Hey fellow vets:

My name is Len and I was a Navy Corpsman, 68-72. I was in county in 69-70. Upon getting out of the service I went to college and joined a Southern California law enforcement agency. I spent twenty-three years before retiring in 95. I have been a private investigator since.

I actually get sick at the thought that John Kerry, AKA "Hanoi John" could become our commander-in-chief. To think that a deserter who aided the enemy while OUR people were in harms way could become President sickens me.

It doesn't matter what you believe in terms of the war's legality, YOU NEVER GIVE AID OR COMFORT TO THE ENEMY!

God bless ALL you vets. SEMPER FI

Fellow Veterans,

I am a former Marine Sgt. and a 100% disabled veteran. I served in the Marine Corps during the time identified as "Vietnam Era"; however, unlike some, I did not serve in country. My contact with the Vietnamese came at MCB Camp Pendleton at the refugee camps. I served 4 yrs. 1 month on active duty (2nd enlistment) as a Motor Vehicle Operator, primarily an Explosives Vehicle Operator (fuel, small arms ammunition and tank rounds). I do not by any stretch of the imagination mean to infer that I am an expert on the Vietnam issue; however, I did serve with a number of Marines who were there and just happened to be my senior enlisted superiors. In that sense, one generally looked up to senior enlisted for advice and instructions.

Admin note:
1 - No one denies that atrocities were committed.

2- This forum is not about the President - it is about promoting the Swifts' message that John Kerry wildly exaggerated his claims about his record and the record of all of his fellow vets. (Oh, excuse me - he has amended his slander of VV's to exclude Swifts.) Please keep Kerry Talking points out of your messages or you will be banned, as you have alluded to in the large portion of text I'm removing from this message.

3 - There is a great deal of respect for your service here. Please don't abuse it or propagate the original lies that caused your service to be dishonored in the first place. Thank you.

War is hell and no matter how you describe it, it is ugly. (edited) We need to lend an ear and allow the veteran the opportunity to vent. We need to share experiences with them and try to show them how to deal with returning home to family and friends. Most of all, we need to be able to tell those returnig that we know what they are going through and what helped us get through those dark times.

I refuse to divulge what and how many medals I have, it is irrelevant to the issue. Wink

My father was peacetime navy.

I was navy, 81-87, Beirut & Libya, E6 STG1(sw) USS Mahan DDG42.

My daughter is current AirForce, was in Diyarbakir Turkey in early 03 for the northern invasion of Iraq that didn't happen. (I know squids, and didn't really want her in the navy. Can you blame me?)

We didn't see the s**t that many of you did, but we were willing and able.

I want to salute and thank all the men and women who served.

God Bless you!
